The Department of Native American Studies invites applications for an Administrative Associate III to serve as the first point of contact for the Native American Studies Department and the Payne Family Native American Center (PFNAC). This position will greet and interact with a variety of visitors and may facilitate building tours. Thus, a general knowledge of Native American history and culture pertaining to Montana and our partnering tribal communities, essential understandings of Indian Education for All, and knowledge of the PFNAC building design history is helpful. The person in this role is required to provide a consistent and professional daily presence in the building and department, and maintains the nonfinancial and financial clerical needs of the Native American Studies Department. This position will also help set and track hours, create task list, and evaluate performance for work study and temporary employees, and may oversee volunteers in PFNAC events and Native student club leadership.

Required Skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of professional office practices and procedures.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, public relations and communication skills. These must include a high level of cultural sensitivity, especially for Native Peoples.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals at all levels in the UM organization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Tribes of Montana and the Indian Education for all seven essential understandings.
  • The capacity to assist in the management of PFNAC, that is utilized by a variety of groups, and an ability to work with and supervise and assist diverse groups and their needs in that space.
  • Ability to maintain and/or develop efficient filing systems processes.
  • Demonstrated skill and ability in the operation of personal computers and related word processing, spreadsheet and database software.
  • Must possess the ability to learn quickly and utilize new/proprietary software programs.
  • Demonstrated skill and ability to operate standard office equipment.
  • Demonstrated organizational, time management and multi-tasking skills.
  • Proven ability to set priorities, delegate tasks and pay close attention to detail.
  • Ability to synthesize and analyze complex information and discern trends for reporting purposes.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently and problem solve.
Minimum Required Experience
  • High School diploma and three (3) years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two-year liberal arts degree or a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant major.
  • Familiarity with UM office practices, processes, and deadlines.
  • Familiarity with academic programs within the university.

Native American Studies is an academic discipline committed to examining the contemporary and past experiences and life ways of the first Americans from their perspective. The curriculum is designed to provide a study of American Indians from a holistic and humanistic viewpoint by focusing upon their cultures, history, and contemporary life. Courses are designed for both Native American and non-Native American students so they can better understand human similarities and differences, thereby leading to the development of better communications and cross-cultural relationships aimed at providing higher education and academic degree completion for students enrolled at UM.

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through

Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year, may

require alternative work schedule

Salary: $15.155/hr -Current employee’s rate of pay for this position will be determined by the staff compensation plan and will minimally be this posted salary. For questions and details regarding the staff compensation plan, email the Compensation Department .

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
