POSITION OVERVIEW:

Sewanee’s Department of Theatre & Dance invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor position for one year, with a possibility of renewal or conversion to the tenure track, to begin July 1, 2023.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

We seek an artist with experience as a professional scenic and lighting designer for theatre and dance productions. The department’s faculty values diversity and is eager to develop increased theatrical innovation. A small but vibrant department, we are housed in the Tennessee Williams Center, a facility built by a remarkable bequest of the royalties of his plays.

ATTRIBUTES OF A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE:

The successful candidate will teach introductory design, scene design, scene painting, lighting design, and other courses that they develop in other areas of interest. They will teach five courses annually, design scenery and/or lighting for departmental productions, and mentor student designers. They will be expected to continue to work professionally as a theatre artist.

Applicants should provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae, three letters of reference, and a 1-2 page statement of teaching philosophy, which should include ideas about fostering an inclusive atmosphere in the classroom. Qualified candidates should have an MFA or Ph.D. The University has committed to diversity, equity and inclusion in scholarship and teaching, and to that end, candidates whose creative work and teaching contribute to DEI are particularly urged to apply.
