Job Description

The Virginia Tech National Security Institute is seeking a highly qualified professional to consult and assist research faculty with complex, research computing problems. The Research Computing Engineer is responsible for supporting the planning, implementation, availability, performance, security, maintenance, and repair of high-performance research computing infrastructure. This includes high performance computing systems, enterprise storage systems, high speed interconnect technologies and networking. This position will also provide tier II and III backup administrative IT (Information Technology) support for the Institute as needed. The institute conducts research that primarily focuses on supporting the national security community, and therefore US citizenship is required for this position.

Required Qualifications

• Master's degree or Bachelor’s degree with significant experience, in a relevant field such as computer science, computer information systems, etc., or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
• Experience with HPC (High Performance Computing) systems and cluster technologies
• Experience with virtualization technology such as VMware vSphere hypervisor, Docker and Kubernetes container management.
• Advanced technical knowledge of research system requirements (memory, CPU and GPU for ai/ml applications)
• Experience with enterprise, high speed storage systems and storage technologies
• Knowledge of HPC storage principles (FC, SAS), file systems (SAM-FS/-QFS, BEE-GFS, ZFS, etc.), and computer node storage (NFS, ISCSI)
• Familiarity with low-latency/high-bandwidth, interconnected infrastructure (including InfiniBand, Myrinet, 10GigE, and others)
• Experience with networking equipment, configuration, and concepts. (Cabling, VLAN, port channel, link aggregation, etc.)
• Experience with Git revision control systems such as Gitlab, GitHub, Bitbucket, etc.
• Extensive knowledge of secure Linux system administration including deployment, automation, scripting, logging, monitoring, etc.
• Proficient fundamental programming skills (Bash, Perl, Python, or similar languages)
• US Citizenship

Preferred Qualifications

• Some experience in one of the following fields: information technology, system administration, or high-performance computing
• Previous experience providing support for research faculty in an academic environment
• Previous experience working on government contracts and federal funding
