Dr. Charles Bagley Jr. Neurosurgery Research Fellowship (July 1, 2023 - June 30, 2024)

The Bagley Research Fellowship honors the memory of Dr. Charles Bagley Jr., the founder of the neurosurgery service at the University of Maryland. Having trained with Dr. Harvey Cushing, Dr. Bagley promoted research and scholarship for the improvement of neurosurgical patient care.

In this spirit, the Bagley Fellow will engage in basic, translational, and clinical research in the Department of Neurosurgery with the goal of producing scholarly work to advance the field of neurosurgery and ultimately improve patient care. The fellow will leverage resources and data derived from the robust neuroscience research and busy neurosurgical practice at the University of Maryland to answer research inquiries. Such opportunities extend from numerous interinstitutional collaborations, including the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center (STC), the University of Maryland Medicine Institute for Neuroscience Discovery (UM MIND), the University of Maryland Neuroscience Network, and the University of Maryland Graduate Program in Neuroscience (UM PIN). The fellow will assist in existing projects led by residents and faculty, and the fellow can initiate mentor-approved personal projects as well. Over the course of the Fellowship, the fellow must meet the predetermined goals and timelines assigned by their faculty mentor.

Day-to-day activities may include but are not limited to:
  • Conducting laboratory experiments
  • Reporting and maintaining experimental data
  • Attending and presenting during laboratory meetings
  • Maintaining current clinical databases and creating new databases
  • Formulating research protocols and drafting IRB proposals
  • Developing grants, abstracts, and/or manuscripts
  • Collaborating with residents and faculty
  • Regularly reporting to a faculty mentor
While the fellow will support resident and faculty research efforts, ultimately the Fellowship is designed as an interested immersive experience for candidates in pursuing neurosurgical residency. As a result, the fellow will receive valuable research experience and develop practical skills related to experimental design and implementation, data analysis, professional submission, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The fellow will interact across research and clinical activities of the Department of Neurosurgery, garnering field exposure and building professional networks.

Outside of research-related duties, the fellow may observe clinical activities within the Department, including didactic conferences, patient rounds, and OR cases. The fellow may not perform any clinical duties.

The Department of Neurosurgery aims to excel and innovate in the clinical practice, science, and education of neurosurgery. We seek to achieve this by creating a platform and culture whereby all team members contribute to this mission and reach their full capacity for impact and fulfillment. Critical to our success is each team member’s alignment and demonstration of our shared values:
  • Patients First
  • Always Do the Right Thing
  • Leave It Better Than You Found It
  • Drive to Mastery
