Job Description
The Department of Art + Design at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi invites applications for the position of Director of University Galleries, at the rank of Associate Professor of Art with tenure on arrival pending approval from the Texas A&M System Board of regents to begin fall 2023. The incoming Director will need to demonstrate a strong record of successful grant writing, fundraising experience, expertise in curatorial activities, and relevant administrative experience. The Director will report to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and teach up to 2 courses per academic year.
The Galleries Director performs a vital role within the Department of Art + Design, the campus, and the greater South Texas community. Through exhibitions, outreach, and events, the Gallery Director is a public facing position that does a great deal toward bringing the public in contact with students, faculty and staff. The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills, represent the Department and the Arts within the University and broader community, advocate for the needs of the galleries, and display the highest ethical values and principles in personal and professional endeavors.
The Responsibilities of the Gallery Director include, but are not limited to:
- Serves as chief curator, overseeing curatorial research, event
programming, and exhibition planning from development to
implementation.
- Develops programming in collaboration and consultation with
departmental faculty and staff.
- Reviews the University Galleries Mission Statement regularly
with Art + Design faculty to assure it is current and meeting
student, department, university, and community needs.
- Supervises the gallery manager
- Recruits, trains, and maintains a student team large enough to
sustain gallery operations (typically 5-8).
- Oversees an annual budget and filing reports.
- Writes grants to support gallery activities, fundraising, and
building connections with collectors and prospective donors on
behalf of the institution.
- Maintains all gallery spaces presenting exhibitions year-round
in line with the university's mission as a Hispanic Serving and
Minority Serving Institution.
- Promotes the preservation and documentation of the university's
permanent collection
- Coordinates the development of marketing materials to promote
upcoming events and gallery news
- Oversees gallery expansions, including the upcoming downtown
gallery space and any future University Galleries
spaces.
- Teaches up to 2 courses per academic year in field of
practice.
The Department of Art + Design is dedicated to cross-disciplinary, collaborative initiatives, enriching our community, and mentoring students to be professionally driven artists, designers, scholars, and creative leaders. The Department of Art + Design offers the following degrees: Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts with Teacher's Certification, and Master of Fine Arts. The Weil Gallery is located on campus in the Center for the Arts building, while the future Downtown Gallery will occupy an off-campus facility located at 223 N. Chaparral St. They are traditional gallery spaces used for screenings, symposia, and exhibitions of work by TAMU-CC graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, and visiting artists from the local, national, and international contexts. Exhibitions held at these venues serve the immediate TAMU-CC campus as well as the greater Corpus Christi community and beyond. The Department hosts or participates in a range of creative activities with entities located in the Coastal Bend community including KSpace Contemporary, The Art Center of Corpus Christi, the Rockport Art Center, and the Art Museum of South Texas, hosting or participating in a range of creative activities. Required Qualifications:
Candidates must meet the appropriate credentialing requirements for the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools (SACS) and hold a terminal degree in Arts Administration, Arts Management, Art History, or Studio Arts. All candidates must meet academic credentials commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor with tenure and hold a record of progressive administrative experience.
- Have a terminal degree in a related field.
- Hold a record of achievement in teaching, academic research,
and service appropriate for a tenured appointment.
- Demonstrate a proven commitment to diversity, equity, and
inclusion that creates an environment where diverse faculty, staff,
and students thrive.
- Present a strong record of relevant experience in art
museum/gallery operations to include administration, collections
management, publications, budget development and oversight, and
supervision of professional staff.
- Possess excellent writing and communication skills, including
established grant writing capabilities.
- Demonstrate effective leadership and the ability to maintain
effective working relationships by utilizing clear communication,
appropriate delegation, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrate the potential to work collaboratively with diverse
groups, including museum staff, university faculty and students,
museum patrons, guest artists, guest curators, and
volunteers/community members, to develop annual programming that is
inclusive of all populations and varied in topics and point of
view.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in Art, Art History, or Museum Studies in higher
education.
- A strong record of fundraising and cultivating relationships
with collectors and prospective donors.
- An understanding of and enthusiasm for the educational role of
art museums.
- Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
through curatorial practices and past programming in line with the
mission of Hispanic/Minority-Serving Institution.
- An established record of effective leadership, team-building,
and collaboration as well as the ability to attract, motivate, and
manage a talented staff.
- The potential to work effectively under pressure and manage
multiple projects simultaneously.
