Responsibilities
Reporting to the Associate Vice Provost of Student Success and Director of Academic Advising, the STEM-focused Academic Success Coach is responsible for working independently and in collaboration with other campus units and relevant staff, faculty, and administrators to advocate for and support student success, particularly in STEM. Coaches provide individualized and holistic academic monitoring, tracking and support services to students from diverse backgrounds and engage in culturally competent practices that demonstrate extensive knowledge and expertise regarding retention, persistence and graduation of students. The STEM success coach supports a culture of commencement through strengths-based approaches and practices, and is expected to demonstrate expertise in supporting Latinx students in alignment with our college HSI (Hispanic Serving Institution) designation.

The STEM Coach provides coordination of daily events and support of the STEM Center, including tutoring and provides insight into long range program planning. They develop strategies to enhance student success, and to increase educational equity and inclusive excellence for students in STEM majors, by implementing data-driven programming, supportive institutional structures, and student success initiatives and services.
1. COACHING
Provide pro-active, regular, consistent, individualized academic and personal support to STEM students over the course of their (undergraduate or graduate) experience. Advocate on behalf of all students, with particular focus on students in STEM disciplines, providing targeted and tailored support and services based on identified risk factors including academic, financial, and psychosocial factors with specific attention to underprepared, underserved and/or traditionally underrepresented students in STEM. Assist students in developing individual plans for success that are goal- and action-oriented.
A. Provide individualized and strengths-based coaching to an assigned caseload of students. Initiate pro-active, regular and consistent contact with students (in person, phone, email, text, social media),
build rapport with students, serve as assigned students' designated student success coach over the course of their academic life-cycle.

B. Work with individual students to develop realistic goals that will contribute to academic and personal success for undergraduate and graduate students; develop relationships that foster developmental
conversations; and motivates students to achieve educational and psychosocial goals.

C. Monitor and track student performance and progress through the Retention Alert, ConexED, and other college technologies and software. Maintain consistent and confidential records of individual student data,
interactions, interventions and referrals.

D. Refer and connect students with relevant college resources; coordinate with college and other stakeholders regarding additional outreach, support and follow up.

E. Exercise cultural competence and utilize group and individual nterventions such as but not limited to, educational and career planning, crisis management, referral services to college resources, decision-making,
transition management, personal growth and development, social adjustments, and goal setting.

2. ENGAGEMENT, ADVOCACY AND OUTREACH
Develop strategies and incentives to increase student achievement and success. Working in collaboration with the STEM Center Director, outreach to students by creating and implementing student-centered programs, events and STEM center activities that promote student success, inclusion, and community. Attend and participate in Student Success events and activities as well as in college-wide events and programming. Collaborate and communicate clearly with campus colleagues to support student success and advocacy.

A. Develop and conduct STEM workshops pertaining to academic, personal and professional development, including topics, strategies, training, or skill building which model best practices in student success in STEM and aligned with our identity as an HSI, and are specific to caseload of students, liaison school, department(s), and/or major(s).

B. Foster a culture of commencement by working with various campus departments and identifying and recommending appropriate services designed to address student needs. Maintain active involvement with college-wide collaboration and programming, such as new and transfer student programs, First Year Experience, First Year Advising Cohorts (FYAC), Transfer Cohorts (TAC), student involvement fairs, cultural graduations, residential experience, student leadership programs and clubs, and other college programs and events.

C. Act as liaison to an assigned academic unit(s) including school(s), department(s), and/or major(s) in relation to assigned caseload of students. Attend liaison-specific academic unit functions, build rapport and relationships with faculty, department chairs, deans, and staff as appropriate.

3. STEM-Center Management
A. Support STEM-director in programming and administrative responsibilities, including the budget and student service. Facilitate ongoing assessment of STEM programs and tutoring services.

B. Oversee the STEM-Center tutoring program
Hire, train, and supervise STEM center tutors in collaboration with the STEM-director. Facilitate communication with other tutoring offices and the Student Success Office.

C. Daily Management of the STEM Center
Manage daily operations of the STEM Center, such as the tutoring schedule, approve tutor hours, track and record staff vacation, sick leave and schedule changes. Maintain STEM Center supplies: such as whiteboard pens and snacks.

4. COACHING ADMINISTRATION, RESEARCH & ASSESSMENT
A. Maintain accurate, organized, and detailed case management processes and procedures including note taking and student records; develop and maintain reports as assigned; and maintain appropriate filing and documentation per FERPA guidelines.

B. Implement and manage accountability standards for student services to ensure student success. Conduct assessments and evaluations of coaching, engagement, advocacy and outreach.

C. Maintain budget expectations and guidelines related to assigned projects and programs with the Director of the Advising Office.

D. Develop and suggest policies, procedures and processes related to college-wide student success with the Director.

E. Serve on College committees as needed.

F. Supervise undergraduate or graduate interns, who will support coaching, engagement, advocacy and outreach activities.

5. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (QUARTERLY/5%)
Saint Mary's is an HSI designated institution. Stay current, read and research best practices and further develop professional knowledge and skills, particularly in supporting students underrepresented in STEM.

A. Increase knowledge and receive training in holistic academic and personal support services and individualized coaching.

B. Attend national and regional conferences and maintain active membership and involvement in regional and national professional organizations.

C. Stay abreast of best practices for student success and working with diverse college students, particularly in STEM.

6. Other Duties as Assigned

Experience and Qualifications

Education:

REQUIRED: Baccalaureate in STEM discipline and MA degree (obtained or in progress) any discipline

PREFERRED: MA Degree, coursework, and/or experience in areas related to one or more of the following: higher education, education, counseling, college student services.

Experience: (years required and applicable field of experience): 1-3 years in higher education, non-profit, or

equivalent

Skills/Abilities: (e.g. computer skills, written & verbal skills, trades, laws, procedures, technical):

- Strong computer skills with high comfort adapting to new programs

- Strong written, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills.

- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

- Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations across race, class, gender, sexuality, age, and/or

ability.

- Strong interpersonal skills
