WCET – the WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technologies seeks highly qualified candidates for this unique and challenging position of director, Every Learner Everywhere Network. In collaboration with a diverse network of higher education organizations, the director will lead Every Learner Everywhere in furthering its mission “to help institutions use new technology to innovate teaching and learning, with the ultimate goal of improving student outcomes for Black, Latino/a, and Indigenous students, poverty-affected students, and first-generation students.” The successful candidate will be a visionary leader with expertise in digital learning, demonstrated commitment to advancing equity in higher education, exceptional communication skills, and proven success with collaborative leadership.

 

Nominations and applications are sought for individuals who bring a demonstrated passion to U.S. higher education’s ability and obligation to better serve the targeted student population. The position is fully funded through December 2025 with prospects for continuation beyond the current grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and other sources.

 

About Every Learner Everywhere

 

Every Learner Everywhere is a network of partner organizations that collaborate with higher education institutions to improve student outcomes for racially marginalized and poverty affected students through innovative digital learning teaching strategies, including the adoption and alignment of digital learning tools and courseware. Our network is interested in a wide range of digital learning topics relating to teaching, learning, and institutional transformation. The 11 diverse partners that comprise Every Learner represent national higher education organizations, research organizations, providers of impactful digital learning solutions, and higher education strategy and consulting organizations. Every Learner Everywhere was established in 2017 through a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Additional investments were made to support the network strategy in November 2018, to address the impacts of COVID in June 2020 a “Refresh” grant in October 2021, a “Bridge” grant in March 2022, and a reinvestment grant in October 2022. Our collaborative work to advance equity in higher education centers on the transformation of postsecondary teaching and learning. We build capacity in colleges and universities to improve student outcomes with digital learning through direct technical assistance, timely resources and toolkits, and ongoing analysis of institution practices and market trends.

 

The two main activities of Every Learner Everywhere are:

  • Service Delivery. Every Learner Everywhere works through intermediary organizations to support institutions in creating better learning experiences and more equitable outcomes for racially-minoritized and poverty-affected students. We provide institutions with professional development and consulting services to support the effective implementation of equitable and high-quality digital learning at scale. Thought Leadership. Every Learner Everywhere collaborates with our network partners to develop high-quality, timely digital learning resources that center equity and the needs of racially-minoritized and poverty-affected students. Over the last several years, we have become a trusted thought leader in the field exploring the intersection of digital learning, equity, and evidence-based teaching practices through our numerous reports, playbooks, blogs, and presentations.

 

WCET – WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technologies serves as the “Intermediary” supplying connections and guidance to the network partners in tackling the challenges and leveraging opportunities to successfully implement digital learning technology to improve student outcomes. The Ideal Candidate will have:

 

  1. A solid working knowledge of how digital learning practices are used by colleges and universities to enhance teaching and learning.
  2. A demonstrated commitment to improving educational opportunities and services that can improve postsecondary attainment by Black, Latino/a, and Indigenous students, poverty-affected students, and first-generation students.
  3. A successful track record in managing large, innovative student success projects/initiatives.
  4. Proven skill to navigate among complex grant and organizational rules and requirements.
  5. Experience and knowledge of the U.S. higher education system, especially with minority-serving institutions (i.e., Hispanic Serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and Tribal Colleges).
  6. Highly effective skills as a public speaker, communicator, listener, negotiator, problem solver, and relationship builder across institutional and system leadership (including faculty, administration, and senior level staff).
  7. Demonstrated skills in leading efforts to promote and market services.
  8. A successful record in creating sustainability strategies, including foundation fundraising, grant-writing, grants management, and creating non-grant revenue streams.
  9. Awareness of higher education issues at the state and federal levels that impact student success and institutional adoption of strategic practices.
  10. Ability and passion to envision strategies for institutional improvements that can scale and that are promising practices leading to success for Black, Latino/a, and Indigenous students, poverty-affected students, and first-generation students.
  11. A highly developed sense of ethics, equity, and fairness in conducting activities across diverse partners.
  12. Ability to manage and inspire staff, partners, and volunteers in a distributed, collaborative environment.
  13. Demonstrated ability to maintain working relationships and collaborate with a broad ecosystem of stakeholders including funders, organizational leaders, institutional leaders, consultants, and students.
  14. Ability to travel and represent the network at various events and conferences around the country.
  15. Educational credentials at the graduate level or significant service in the field of technology-enhanced teaching and learning in higher education.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities are to:

 

  1. Build and sustain highly effective relationships with and among Every Learner network partners.
  2. Provide consistent leadership and direction with staff, partners, and the public in assuring that Every Learner’s equity focus permeates all activities.
  3. Build and sustain highly effective relationships with WCET and WICHE staff in their roles in overseeing and providing operational services and leadership guidance for grant activities.
  4. Establish a future sustainability strategy to extend and expand Every Learner beyond its initial grant funding, building upon established healthy relationships with other prospective funders and through non-grant revenue streams.
  5. Ensure fiscal accountability, accuracy, and financial reporting of grant funds.
  6. Effectively manage the intermediary’s and the network’s multifaceted relationship with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation including: Maintain effective relationships with the intermediaries of other solution networks and with other institutional and organizational grantees.
  7. Ensure alignment with the foundation’s evolving Postsecondary Success strategy, flag risks and risks in execution, and uncover opportunities to accelerate institutional improvement for student success. Coordinate Every Learner’s participation in bi-annual evaluation and reviews of progress. Represent the Every Learner network in other postsecondary networks and collaborations supported by the foundation.
  • Ensure strong communications and accountability with funders, WCET, and WICHE.
  • Promote connections to advance scaling of high-quality practices and tools across higher education and in institutions that serve Black, Latino/a, and Indigenous students, poverty-affected students, and first-generation students.
  • Monitor developments in the larger ecosystem/field and consider other relevant potential contributors to ensure Every Learner has the necessary capacity to achieve its goals.
  • Regularly engage in public speaking and writing for professional and lay audiences.
  • Extensive travel to represent Every Learner Everywhere at foundation meetings, and external conferences and gatherings.
  • Provide excellent supervision and management of the Intermediary team.

 

Organizational Responsibility:

 

Reports to the WCET executive director, who also serves as the WICHE vice president for Technology-enhanced Education.

 

Travel: Two to three trips per month.
