Visiting Assistant Professor - Video Game Writer / Narrative Designer (Dep of English)

As part of a University of North Texas initiative seeking multiple faculty lines in the area of Game Studies and Design, the Department of English invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor in Video Game Writing / Narrative Design. The position to begin August 2023.

 

The Game Studies and Design program offers a 15-hour, interdisciplinary certificate and a BS in Integrative Studies with a Theme in Game Studies. These degrees have been developed in coordination with Dallas-Fort Worth area game studios and they introduce students to contemporary ideas and practices in game studies, design and project leadership.

 

 

 

Visiting Assistant Professor - Video Game Writer / Narrative Designer (Dep of English)  

 

Full-time one year Visiting Assistant Professor position in Game Writing / Narrative Design with a 2 courses per semester teaching load. The successful candidate will teach game writing workshops and narrative design theory to excited undergraduate students within our multidisciplinary Bachelor of Science in Game Studies and Design degree plan. Other duties include directing and strengthening the degree program, creating a student organization to promote and centralize out-of-class co-curricular activities, and advising students pursuing the Game Studies and Design Certificate. We are looking for candidates with an active practice of writing for games in a professional game studio environment. In addition to narrative design, relevant fields of interest can include but are not limited to Media Studies, Critical Cultural Studies, Black Media Studies, Feminist Studies, Queer and Trans Studies, Experimental Media, Social and Environmental Justice. Salary commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Must have a relevant degree and no fewer than 18 hours of graduate work from an accredited college or university.
  • Professional experience in game writing, narrative design in games, or other relevant content.
  • Expertise in video game narrative, a clear commitment to undergraduate education, and the promise of outstanding teaching at the graduate level are required.

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Game Design, Fine Arts, or related field from a regionally accredited institution, three (3) years of professional experience in the area of specialization, and evidence of documented exceptional accomplishments in the field; or MFA in creative writing from an accredited institution and either three (3) years of full-time teaching experience at a regionally accredited institution or three (3) years of professional experience in the area of specialization; or Doctorate in English Literature or MFA in creative writing or a game-development-related discipline from a regionally accredited institution Has shipped at least one AAA game or equivalent experience. Experience teaching or participating in Game Writing workshops at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. Experience building and/or growing university or collegiate level game programs, including adjacent student organizations.
