The Office of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) seeks a Director of Prospect Development for Medical Philanthropy to join the Prospect Development team. Working closely with the VCU Health System (VCUHS) and the office of Medical Philanthropy and Alumni Relations, the director plays an essential role in driving prospect strategy in support of Medical Philanthropy. This is a new position, created to develop and implement a robust Medical Philanthropy prospect strategy program including developing an effective and efficient Grateful Patient program and incorporating the Grateful Patient program into the work of dedicated Medical Philanthropy prospect management and research professionals. In addition, the Director will be adept at both building strong relationships across all levels of staff and driving fundraising results through program evaluation and process improvement.

Success in this position is:
- Creating a prospect development driven Grateful Patient program that efficiently communicates high quality patient leads to fundraisers resulting in increased fundraising outcomes
- Leading an innovative and best-in-class Medical Philanthropy Prospect Development team. Establishing a network of national leaders to advise on challenges and best practices
- Incorporating Grateful Patient into the prospect development strategies for portfolio and pipeline optimization on behalf of the office of Medical Philanthropy and Alumni Relations
- Establishing highly collaborative relationships with members of the Medical Philanthropy team

Key Duties Include:
- Oversee the Medical Philanthropy Prospect Development team’s strategy in coordination with the Executive Director of Prospect Development and senior staff of Prospect Management and Research
- Direct the Medical Philanthropy Prospect Development team in designing and executing prospect development strategies to meet established and emerging prospect research and management needs. Support the use of metrics for tracking efficiency and impact
- Provide analysis and insight on the Medical Philanthropy team’s prospect pool, working closely with stakeholders to drive strategic decision support to the VCUHS Medical Philanthropy team including the implementation of a set of key performance indicators
- Manage the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of reports and dashboards in support of data-driven fundraising decisions
- Chief advocate and strategist for the comprehensive grateful patient data program. Operationalizes an efficient and effective program that builds a pipeline of grateful patient prospects and revenue, engages fundraisers, physicians, and others in the grateful patient process, and assists in creating a culture of philanthropy throughout VCUHS.
- Partner in the design and implementation of a grateful patient module in the CRM, with a particular emphasis on major gifts and portfolio management
- Serve as an internal and external consultant on prospect development in the medical philanthropy space
- Support DAR leadership by modeling team values and holding team members accountable for also maintaining those values

Required qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Two years of supervisory experience
- Education and experience equivalencies will be considered
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment and commitment to do so as a professional employee at VCU
- Knowledge of:
*Fundraising under the rules of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule as well as the handling of Protected Health Information (PHI)
*The standards set forth by APRA
*Advanced prospect development techniques
- Skill with:
* Working in medical philanthropy, three plus years preferred
* Setting strong ethical boundaries, especially regarding confidentiality
* Building strong relationships, including strong oral and written communication skills
* Analysis techniques and tools used to modify, retrieve, manipulate, and report on data from relational database management systems
- Ability to:
* Handle interpersonal relationships maturely, thoughtfully, and empathetically
* Independently plan, organize, and execute multiple tasks and responsibilities, prioritizing and organizing work to accomplish departmental goals
* Lead a team through times of great change and the establishment of a new program
* Mentor and coach team members towards shared leadership
* Envision the use of technical tools in concert to their fullest potential for increased departmental effectiveness
