Academic Program Coordinator, Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse and Exceptional Learners (tenure-line position)


The George Mason University College of Education and Human Development (, invites applications from mid-career and senior faculty to provide dynamic leadership to an innovative program in Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse and Exceptional Learners (TCLDEL).


The College seeks an accomplished, high-energy faculty leader to serve as Academic Program Coordinator (APC) in a tenure-line (associate/full professor rank) position. This faculty member should have both research and teaching expertise in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and/or world language education, experience with innovative approaches to teaching culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) learners, and a strong commitment to bridging research and practice. Housed within the Division of Advanced Professional Teacher Development and International Education (APTDIE), this position would complement a vibrant faculty focused on research in national and international contexts. Doctoral specializations in international, multicultural-multilingual, and teacher education are also housed within the Division.

The TCLDEL Program is dedicated to graduating exceptionally well-prepared teachers through its licensure and non-licensure concentrations in TESOL/ESOL, World/Foreign Language, and International Baccalaureate Education. TCLDEL faculty provide innovative teacher education programs along with timely research and professional development aimed at enhancing the quality of education for CLD learners in global and multicultural PK-12 settings. Specific responsibilities for this tenure-line position include:

  • Maintaining an active line of research; Teaching graduate-level courses related to linguistics for ESOL teachers, bilingualism and second language acquisition, language and literacy for English learners, ESOL methods, and assessment; Developing and teaching online courses; Completing essential service activities (such as those related to student assessment and accreditation); and Contributing to special initiatives designed to further the mission of the College in areas related to teaching CLD learners.


The Academic Program Coordinator (APC) would collaborate with TCLDEL faculty to oversee, manage, and promote a diverse and innovative interdisciplinary set of graduate programs including initial licensure programs in English as a Second Language (ESL) and World Languages, as well as certificate programs for ESOL and International Baccalaureate (the first such program in North America). As a senior member of the faculty, it is expected that the APC will add strength and versatility in program teaching and service roles, and maintain a robust line of research. The following are the core functions of an APC:

  • Engaging in proactive problem solving and sharing of program-specific information with faculty and staff, colleagues, and administrators; Management of curriculum development efforts (i.e., program/course revisions, new program/course development, communication of new or revised programs/courses); Supervision of instruction (e.g., course scheduling, hiring and supporting adjuncts, syllabi review and integrity); Oversight of student advising and student degree progress in collaboration with academic advisor; Contributions to enrollment management and recruitment in collaboration with program faculty and central offices; Communication as needed with external partners and constituencies; and Reporting related to accreditation, assessment, program improvement efforts, etc.


Required Qualifications:

Candidates for this position must have:

  • An earned doctorate in TESOL, applied linguistics, bilingual education or related field; A profile of demonstrated teaching excellence and significant academic and applied experiences in the study and practice of multilingual learners; Experience in teacher education through in-person, online, and blended learning environments; Evidence of a developed and focused program of research and scholarly activity, including publications in peer-reviewed journals; Significant leadership experiences that have prepared them to serve as the TCLDEL Academic Program Coordinator; and Capabilities that facilitate effective working relationships with faculty and staff, division leaders, and college administrators for the successful implementation of the TCLDEL academic program.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preferred qualifications include demonstrated ability to secure external funding, success in mentoring doctoral students, practical experience in K-12 education, and experience with accreditation and assessment of candidate performance.
