Reporting to the Program Manager Commissioning, Office of Capital Projects (OCP), the MEP Commissioning Engineer will support consistency of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) trade Quality Assurance and Quality Control associated with Facilities Capital Project execution and turnover. Specific emphasis will be placed on implementing design phase detailing throughout the construction phase installation of MEP systems including low voltage systems like security and IT. The MEP Commissioning Engineer plays a critical role in enabling Princeton University to deliver construction projects effectively. The primary focus is to ensure Commissioning, Quality Assurance processes and related surveys, testing and systems turnover are managed in a way that promotes successful occupancy and long-term operation of a project. Additionally, this position will include a critical role in supporting the formal building turnover process for review of project systems documentation, Commissioning Tests, Construction Issues logs, Punch lists, and other outstanding issues not resolved at the point of beneficial occupancy. Building turnover culminates with a number of trades specific turnover meetings which include Facilities Operations representatives, Special Facilities representatives, AE team members, the CM (Construction Manager) and Commissioning Agent (Cx) where applicable. This position will be responsible for supporting the Program Manager of Commissioning to coordinate these meetings for MEP, Electronic Safety and Security, and IT trades.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
This position will be responsible for continued development of our MEP trades construction standards documented in the Facilities Design Standards Manual (DSM) and will assist OCP Architectural and Sustainability Project Engineers to maintain Facilities Department design standards and update them on a regular basis. Work closely with the Program Manager Commissioning to expand the current OCP Commissioning Program to include low voltage trades such as Electronic Safety and Security This position will be responsible for coordinating the MEP portion of post occupancy evaluations and 10-month warranty walkthroughs on all projects.
- Assist with project turnover including documentation, training, and post occupancy review.
- Perform Quality Control tasks such as on-site survey, testing and Cx activities that advance each design and construction-phase project towards acceptance, occupancy and close out.
- Coordinate with OCP Field Managers (FM) to ensure MEP and low voltage systems quality is maintained through the construction process, including review of Commissioning testing, change orders, ASIs, and revisions for technical compatibility with Facilities requirements.
- Professional degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related field. Professional registration as an architect or engineer is desirable.
- Minimum of five years’ experience in reviewing plans for major construction or renovation projects emphasizing architectural and civil disciplines.
- At least five years’ experience must be associated with work on buildings similar to those found in an institutional environment, preferably as a member of a facilities-owner organization and five or more years of experience is required in building envelope commissioning/consulting efforts or as commissioning agent on small and large projects, including preconstruction-phase commissioning services.
- Ability to interpret construction documents, an understanding of applicable construction codes, working knowledge of the principles of design, overview of architectural and site/civil system elements, and a solid grasp of construction industry practices and procedures.
- Successful completion of various manufacturer’s training associated with standard proprietary university waterproofing systems within the first year of employment to perform certified site observation of these systems in compliance with warranty requirements.
