Given this context, faculty in the Department of Exercise Physiology in the School of Health Sciences seeks a nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Public Health with a start date of August 1, 2023. The department seeks an exceptional candidate who will teach undergraduate courses, serve as a faculty advisor, and mentor students. The successful candidate will produce scholarly research that results in publications in peer-reviewed journals within the discipline, present at professional conferences, and engage in procuring extramural funds with interdisciplinary teams. Additionally, the faculty member will participate in departmental, school, and university service as well as engage in service to the professional discipline and the larger Winston-Salem and Forsyth County community.

Faculty in the Department of Exercise Physiology seek exceptional candidates in the field of Public Health who demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching to undergraduate students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. The following qualifications and skills are required for this position:
  • Earned MPH and a completed doctoral degree in Public Health (DrPH, DPH, or PhD) from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Evidence of mentoring students through research experiences with a focus on epidemiological studies, environmental sciences, health disparities, or the realm of scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • The ability to participate in interdisciplinary teaching and research collaborations at the university, across universities, or within the broader community.
  • Evidence of research and experience in one of the core areas of public health with emphasis in the areas of epidemiology, informatics, and/or environmental health.
  • A commitment to equity in a diverse educational community.
  • A commitment to personal growth and development via engagement in professional organizations and professional conferences.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills along with effective interpersonal skills
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
  • Academic teaching experience of three to five years at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
  • Experience with distance technology and learning management platforms.
  • Record of involvement with professional associations.
  • Commitment to diversity, social justice, innovation, and collaboration.
  • Evidence of scholarly contributions to the profession (i.e., publications, presentations at local, state, and national levels).

Faculty in the Department of Exercise Physiology seek a committed and engaged faculty member who will perform specific duties at a high level. These duties include but are not limited to the following:
Teaching and Advising
  • The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in Public Health using face-to-face and online methodologies.
  • The successful candidate must teach courses in the field (e.g., Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Program Planning and Evaluation, Environmental and Climate Justice, Informatics, and/or related courses).
  • The successful candidate must construct detailed course syllabi.
  • The ideal candidate will facilitate high quality, engaging instruction where he or she integrates “high impact practices” into their instructional delivery.
  • The ideal candidate will leverage various technologies (e.g., Canvas, EAB Navigate) to communicate regularly with students, monitor student progress, and provide feedback on student success outcomes.
  • The successful candidate must engage with students during mandatory office hours each week.
  • The ideal candidate will serve as an academic advisor.

Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity
  • The ideal candidate must articulate a scholarship and/or research agenda.
  • The ideal candidate must execute the agenda to align with the mission of the university and the academic unit.
  • The successful candidate must present his/her original research and scholarship at local, state, national, and international professional conferences and meetings.
  • The ideal candidate must work collaboratively with faculty across the university and external to the institution as well as with professionals across the nation to form interdisciplinary teams that procure extramural funding.
  • The successful candidate must participate in ongoing professional development opportunities to evolve his/her professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions.

University, Professional, and Community Service and Engagement
  • Consistently attend departmental and college meetings.
  • Serve on departmental-level committees.
  • Serve on college- and university-level committees.
  • Maintain membership in discipline-specific professional organizations.
  • Assist discipline-specific professional organizations with reviews of conference proposals, peer-reviewed journal articles, and other professional engagement opportunities.
