FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The School of Education at Hunter College invites applications for the position of Lecturer (Doctoral Schedule) in Undergraduate Teacher Education Programs, to begin in Fall 2023. The School of Education comprises over 70 full-time faculty and approximately 3,000 students across doctoral, master’s, and bachelor programs spanning a diverse collection of certification and preparation programs for teachers, counselors, and educational leaders. With school and organizational partnerships across the five boroughs, the School of Education plays a major role in preparing the teachers, leaders, and counselors for New York City’s public schools. We approach these purposes with a shared belief that the promise of education to improve lives cannot be accomplished without addressing existing societal inequities and injustices.

Hunter College offers undergraduate certification programs in Adolescent Education and Childhood Education. In this role, the successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the integration of clinical experiences and coursework. Teaching responsibilities will include student teaching seminars and supervision along with undergraduate courses in subject area methods in childhood or adolescent education, social foundations of education, psychological foundations, childhood or adolescent development, and literacy. This position has no requirement for research publications. The candidate’s appointment may be in any of our three academic departments – Curriculum and Teaching, Educational Foundations and Counseling, or Special Education. In addition, the successful candidate will support undergraduate education programs through advising and mentoring students and collaborating with other School of Education faculty and staff

Goals and Expectations

  • Teach undergraduate courses in: subject area methods in childhood or adolescent education, social foundations of education, psychological foundations, childhood or adolescent development, literacy, or a related field; the teaching load is 24 hours (8 courses) for each academic year;
  • Supervise student clinical fieldwork experiences and teach the student teaching seminar;
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate students in teacher education programs;
  • Assist in outreach to undergraduates who might be interested in teacher education programs;
  • Collaborate with School of Education Offices (Admissions, Student Advising, Clinical Experiences, Institutional Research, Partnership Programs) to serve undergraduate students enrolled in teacher education programs;
  • Demonstrate knowledge and support for advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility issues in education.
  • Participate in service to support the program, department, School and College

QUALIFICATIONS

Doctoral degree in Childhood (Elementary) Education, Adolescent (Secondary) Education, Elementary Education, subject area teaching methods, social foundations of education, psychological foundations of education, literacy, or a related field requried. We seek candidates who have knowledge and demonstrated experience in and passion for work in urban schools and have implemented innovative practices in teacher education.

Experience in teaching at the undergraduate levels

PK-12 public school teaching or administration experience

Experience in overseeing clinical experiences in teacher education

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of teaching
  • Evidence of engaged and equitable student learning as informed by current practices and scholarship such as anti-racist and culturally relevant pedagogies.
  • Experience in the use of emerging technology tools in teacher education
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

VACCINE REQUIREMENT

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after October 1, 2022 -- City of New York employees and employees of participating employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after October 1, 2022 will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.

After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period.

If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day.

Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period. An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the EmblemHealth website.’

COMPENSATION

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The qualifications and experience necessary for this position will put the salary in the upper half of the salary schedule.
