Position Purpose
Starting in September 2023, the Music Department seeks a skilled, team-oriented director for our steel drums ensemble, the Global Rhythm Ensemble. This is a foundational ensemble for students at the beginner to advanced-intermediate level. The ensemble includes steel drums and rhythm section. The ideal candidate will have experience leading/directing a steel drums group and arranging music.
Part-time exempt adjunct faculty. Nine-month position. Rehearsals held Wednesday afternoon, 4:30 – 6:00 pm. Some other hours, including weekends upon arrangement.

Education
- A. or B.M. required. Master’s degree in conducting, education, or performance preferred.
- 3+ years of successful conducting experience.
- 3+ years of professional performing experience.
- Excellent musicianship and superb ability to teach technique, repertoire, and musical skills to students from beginner to intermediate-advanced levels.
- Ability to create a positive and productive learning environment for high school age students.
- Capacity to teach a variety of styles and genres.
- Enthusiasm for working with adolescents.
- Commitment to working in and serving the needs of a diverse and inclusive community.
Teaching:
- In conjunction with the department chair, program pedagogically and developmentally appropriate repertoire for the ensemble.
- Direct rehearsals on Wednesday afternoons from 4:30 – 6:00 pm.
- Conduct the Global Rhythm Ensemble end of term concerts concluding each trimester (November, February, and May) as well as in any agreed-to additional performances planned with the department
- Use campus systems to report attendance, give student feedback through term-end written comments, and communicate with students and relevant campus adults.
- Understand the Academy’s calendar and daily schedule and effectively use Academy systems for communication and course management.
- Communicate student issues or concerns with Department Chair and/or Student’s Advisor or student’s parents when necessary.
- Collaborate with colleagues on faculty performances as interested/available.
- Participate in occasional department meetings, PEA faculty meetings, and other forms of shared governance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Faculty are expected to demonstrate respect for diversity of identities and experiences, an orientation toward equity and inclusion, and cultural competency in all aspects of Academy life.
- Willingness to enforce all school policies and rules governing student behavior.
