Job Summary:
The Assistant Vice President ( AVP ) for Institutional Advancement is responsible for moving a portfolio of 50-100 major gift prospects through the complete giving cycle and serves as a critical leadership team member in the division. The AVP will also support the day-to-day operations of the Institutional Advancement Office while providing leadership for the direction, planning, and implementation of development-focused activities under the Vice President’s (VP) supervision. The AVP will work closely with the VP on developing the strategic direction for the development program while managing a substantial prospect portfolio.
Principal Responsibilities:
Fundraising:
- Plan and execute solicitation strategies leading to major gifts; contact donors to pursue these strategies and build enduring relationships, completing 125-150 virtual and in-person visits per year.
- Communicate with major prospects and donors about specific ways to give, both current and deferred, to maximize gift and tax benefits.
- Prepare solicitation letters, gift agreements, proposals, or other development materials to articulate CSU’s needs, values, and mission.
- Work closely with Vice President to develop strategies on prospect cultivation, solicitation, and plan for achieving institutional priorities.
- In collaboration with the Vice President, serve as a contact for the CSU Development Foundation Board of Directors and work with members to encourage their giving and fundraising efforts.
- Provide leadership and support for the Board Development Committee and Nominations Committee.
- Partner with the Vice President, Board Executive, and Nominations Committee to recruit, onboard, and support board members to be effective in fundraising and fiscal oversight.
- Supervise staff responsible for generating private funds, events, advancement services, alumni and university relations.
- Assess and oversee implementation of best practices for a successful development program.
- Oversee the recruitment of development staff and develop an effective orientation process for new staff.
- Provide leadership, goal setting, and mentoring to the development team
- Arrange for appropriate training and professional development to be available and utilized for the development and support of staff.
- Interface with deans, faculty, and staff to identify fundraising opportunities and work on special fundraising projects.
- Provide oversight for operational and administrative functions such as gift accounting, reporting, and stewardship.

- Other duties as assigned by the Vice President.
Education:
- A Bachelor’s degree is required; a graduate degree is preferred.
- Five to seven years with progressively responsible fundraising, preferably in a development office setting.
- Applicants may be required to complete the institution’s required skills assessment to be considered. Some positions require specific skills such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, email or calendaring software, and Internet proficiency.

- Knowledge of current trends in philanthropy and education
