Position Details
Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job
As a key member of the department, the Psychology faculty member will assist the Chair of Primary Care and Clinical Medicine in development of clinical content for courses related to the field of Behavioral Health with emphasis on mental health and patient interviewing and counseling. The successful candidate will participate in teaching in the systems courses, physical exam course, case-based learning sessions, preparation for clerkship, procedural skills training and OSCE’s. The individual should be comfortable working in pre-clinical and clinical education for student doctors and resident physicians, as well as evaluation of curriculum and students through various learning and assessment methods. The Psychology faculty member is expected to act as a role model for students, participate in scholarship and research in the department and foster collaboration and interdisciplinary learning.
The successful candidate will also participate in the SHSU clinical practice. The ideal candidate should have strong clinical acumen and promote collaboration between psychologist, psychiatrist and other physicians in the practice.
The University is seeking a qualified candidate for full-time Psychology Faculty. This position serves the Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, in the Department of Primary Care and Clinical Medicine, and reports to the Chair. The College of Osteopathic Medicine will graduate it’s inaugural class in May 2024 and is in the process of developing new residency programs. The College of Osteopathic Medicine is focused on primary care, psychiatry, general surgery and other specialties identified as a physician workforce shortage in the State of Texas and has developed an integrated curriculum merging basic science instruction with clinical learning and an osteopathic emphasis. Thus, behavioral health is an important component of the curriculum.
Note: This position may be tenure-eligible based on applicant preference.
Educational Requirements for the Position
The successful candidate will have a Doctoral degree in Psychology (or similar clinical behavioral science degree) from an accredited college and Texas license good standing or eligibility to be licensed in Texas. In addition, a background in medical or clinical education is preferred, as is experience in pre-clinical and clinical teaching and well-developed communication skills. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and training.
Experience Required for the Position
A strong background in medical education is preferred, as is experience in pre-doctoral teaching, well-developed communication skills and knowledge of physical exam skills and all aspects of clinical medicine education.
Other Requirements for the Position
Ability to communicate and work with faculty, medical students, clerkship coordinators,
hospital administrators, physician preceptors and college administration. Excellent written and verbal communication. Demonstrates personal initiative and abilities to deal with a rapidly changing environment. Familiar with Learning Management Systems and reporting. Ability to operate academic, clinical and other software as needed. Other duties as assigned.
*Note: While SHSU main campus is in Huntsville, TX, this position will reside at the Conroe, TX satellite location.
