The Department of Central Eurasian Studies in the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies at Indiana University Bloomington seeks a non-tenure track, visiting full-time Lecturer in Finnish language. Initial contract will be for one academic year (August 2023 through May 2024), with the possibility of annual extension decisions for up to two (2) additional years. The role is considered renewable under the expectation of a favorable annual faculty review, and is subject to availability of appropriate funding, programmatic need, and subsequent mutual interest.

MA degree required by beginning of appointment. Native-speaker or equivalent Finnish language proficiency required. Successful applicant will be expected to teach Finnish language to undergraduate and graduate students at multiple levels (introductory, intermediate, advanced, post-advanced) as determined by the department. Courses on Finnish society and culture may also be taught if required by the department.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to excellence in teaching, public engagement, and program development of Finnish language within Indiana University’s world-class Central Eurasian Studies faculty as well as within the Hamilton Lugar School.

PhD or ABD preferred, in a subfield of Finnish studies such as language acquisition, linguistics, or literature. Previous experience teaching Finnish as a second/foreign language in the classroom and in distance and online settings is desirable. Ability to conduct pedagogical research on the Finnish language will be viewed positively.
