Job Description

In recent years, zebrafish has emerged as one of the leading models for developmental and computational neuroscience. The advantages of zebrafish include powerful genetics, simple nervous system, and translucent brain, ideal for structural and functional studies of the brain. These qualities have greatly facilitated the use of zebrafish to understand the complex interactions between genes, neural circuits, and behavior.

The Pan lab at the Virginia Tech Fralin Biomedical Research Institute (FBRI) uses zebrafish to understand the complex interactions between genes, neural circuits, and behavior (https://fbri.vtc.vt.edu/research/labs/pan.html). We aim to elucidate the roles of cell adhesion molecules and candidate disease genes in the assembly of neurons into functional neural pathways. At this time, the Pan lab is seeking to hire a Postdoctoral Associate to pursue the goals of our recently awarded NIH R01 grant https://reporter.nih.gov/search/6ltVdhcutUSi4XqN-hEReg/project-details/10566449). The incumbent will be responsible for (1) performing experimental studies using a combination of biochemical, genetic, imaging, and behavioral techniques, (2) collaborate with PI to write grant proposals and research papers, and (3) participate in laboratory upkeep and animal husbandry (genotyping, breeding, and maintaining stocks).

We seek a bright, enthusiastic, and motivated individual who is interested in utilizing the advantages of the zebrafish model to understand the development of neural circuits. As a member of the Pan lab, the ideal candidate would share our commitment to promote inclusion, equity, and diversity and help create a community that nurtures learning and growth for all of its members.
