The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts (ASMSA), a campus of the University of Arkansas System, invites applications from highly qualified candidates for a ten-month, full-time opening as an Art and Design Instructor beginning August 1, 2023. This member of ASMSA’s faculty will play a critical role in the continued cultivation of the school’s arts curriculum and initiatives.

In brief, ASMSA is tasked with providing extraordinary opportunities for a diverse group of students. Established by the General Assembly in 1991 as a public, residential high school to serve talented and motivated Arkansas juniors and seniors from throughout the state as a school of choice, ASMSA—located in historic downtown Hot Springs and adjacent to Hot Springs National Park—is one of only 17 public, residential high schools in the United States specializing in the education of students with an interest in advanced careers in math and science as well as passion for and creativity within studio, language and digital arts. ASMSA offers more than 60 courses for college credit, and all students earn an average of 50 hours of college credit while finishing high school. Graduates achieve an average ACT composite score of 30. Newsweek, The Daily Beast, and The Washington Post have ranked ASMSA among the nation’s Top 25 high schools over the past four years.

The primary focus of the position will be multimedia and digital art. Secondary areas of interest could include graphic design, digital storytelling, digital photography, podcasting, social media, videography, film, and/or animation. The successful candidate will teach a five-course load per semester of courses covering the above media and disciplines. The successful candidate will have opportunities to develop new courses and refine the art curriculum at ASMSA. The successful candidate will work closely with additional art faculty and administrators within the Department of Arts and Humanities to further expand instructional technology, complement and balance art and design course offerings, and identify areas of particular need and growth in new media. The successful candidate will work closely with students and will identify opportunities for student success. ASMSA faculty receive support for continued professional development and the successful candidate will be strongly encouraged to continue their professional creative endeavors.

Strong consideration will be given to applicants who hold an MFA, MA, or similar graduate degree in their discipline with the ability to teach certain college-credit courses. All candidates should demonstrate evidence of excellence in teaching. Preferred candidates will have a minimum of three years’ teaching experience. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in working with gifted students, teaching through technology, developing interdisciplinary curricula, team planning skills, and problem-solving skills congruent to a growing, dynamic academic program within a multidisciplinary institution.

As a residential community of learning, ASMSA’s core philosophy values the development of students’ interests and talents beyond the classroom. As such, faculty are expected to support student portfolio development, provide tutoring assistance, facilitate successful transitions for incoming students, promote the school through outreach programs and contribute to the residential experience.

Interested applicants should submit the following materials via the Workday platform: a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy, and unofficial transcripts.  Candidates are encouraged to supply links to websites demonstrating professional work and student work, if applicable.

Review of applications will commence on March 8, 2023, and continue until the position has been filled. The estimated salary range is $50,000 to $60,000 depending on degree. ASMSA’s Faculty Advancement Plan provides avenues for academic promotion and salary increases for exceptional performance as well as support of the school’s mission in addition to ordinary raises through the annual evaluation process based upon success and excellence in teaching, service, and creative/scholarly activity.

Candidate must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident. ASMSA is an AA/EOE employer.
