Founded in 1881, Spelman College is a private four-year liberal arts college located in Atlanta, GA. Position Description

The Environmental and Health Sciences Program invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin Fall 2023. We seek outstanding teacher/scholars dedicated to excellence in health science. The individual selected for the position will teach courses and advise students in support of Spelman’s Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science. Research based knowledge and/or work experience in one or more of the following areas will be given preference: physiology, pathophysiology, biomedical sciences. The position also requires contributing effectively to curriculum development efforts, advising, and mentoring students, providing service to the department and college, and establishing a competitive and highly productive undergraduate research program. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to working with women and underrepresented minority students through teaching, mentoring, and research are especially encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will work within a collegial and active interdisciplinary department with faculty comprised of both dedicated teachers and motivated researchers. Responsibilities include teaching the equivalent of six courses (depending on undergraduate course teaching load) each academic year in traditional and non-traditional formats; advising students; mentoring students on research projects and related writing; serving on department and college committees; developing research; and contributing to the College’s mission.

Qualifications

Requirements for the position include a doctoral degree from a regionally accredited university, awarded by the beginning of contract; academic credentials and experience related to physiology, pathophysiology, or biomedical sciences; evidence of excellence in teaching or potential for excellence in teaching in face-to-face and web-enhanced formats; evidence of research experience, scholarly writing, and potential for establishing a successful record of scholarly activity.
