Teaching Faculty Position (Environmental Engineering)

In the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Florida A&M University – Florida State University College of Engineering

(Permanent, Non-Tenure Track Position)

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering invites applications for a teaching faculty (full-time, 12-month, non-tenure-track faculty) position.  The successful candidate will teach primarily undergraduate coursework, with an expected focus on environmental engineering and water resources, depending on the candidate's experience and the needs of the department. The candidate is expected to integrate modern software and equipment into required and elective undergraduate courses, to prepare graduates for current engineering practice. The appointment rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience. The teaching faculty’s role is to teach junior and senior level environmental and water resources classes.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has a strong and growing reputation with a special focus on disaster resilience and sustainability, recently establishing the Center for Resilient Infrastructure and Disaster Response (RIDER). The successful candidate will join 25 full-time faculty members in a department with over 400 undergraduate and over 80 graduate students, and will work closely with colleagues at the RIDER Center (https://rider.eng.famu.fsu.edu/), the FAMU School of the Environment (https://soe.famu.edu/), the FSU Department of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Science (https://www.eoas.fsu.edu/), and various centers on both campuses.

The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is the nexus of two major public universities, each with a distinct mission but focused on world-class engineering education and research. Created by the Florida Legislature in 1982, the joint institution is the college of engineering for both Florida A&M and Florida State universities. This unique combination of focus, resources and mission from our parent institutions has created on our campus a truly innovative atmosphere that leverages the benefits of the traditional HBCU model with the innovations of an R-1 public research university. After completing pre-requisites at their home institution, FAMU and FSU students learn, study and research together at our independent campus with joint-appointed faculty and staff. Students graduate from their enrolling university and from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. Both FAMU and FSU are part of the State University System of Florida and are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Additionally, all six of the college’s eligible undergraduate degree programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org. The Department’s civil and environmental engineering programs are EAC/ABET accredited and support approximately 400 undergraduates and 80 graduate students, as well as vibrant research programs.

Responsibilities

Applicants should have significant, high-level engineering and teaching experience to facilitate learning, and should be able to help prepare students for their professional careers. Major responsibilities for this position are associated with teaching the department’s required junior and senior environmental and water resources courses.  Additional teaching responsibilities will include elective courses in the applicant’s area(s) of expertise, preferably senior level design courses.  Service responsibilities for teaching faculty include activities such as committee service, advising, and working with student organizations.  Research activity is not expected, although a small amount is allowed.  The ideal candidate would also have experience in teaching online-based courses.

Qualifications

Because of the nature of the position, we see practice experience as an important complement to academic preparation.  The ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D. in civil engineering or in a closely related engineering discipline with a preferred minimum of 5 years of engineering experience. PE licensure and significant design experience are preferred.  The successful candidate will be expected to have a strong commitment to high-quality teaching, primarily though not exclusively, at the undergraduate level, service to the department and campus, and outreach activities. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to motivate and inspire students are essential.
