General Statement of Duties:
Under general
supervision performs skilled work at the journeyman level related
to the inspection, installation, adjustment, maintenance, overhaul
and repair of boiler systems and all components of central and
outlying boilers, domestic furnaces, steam and condensate
distribution piping, and related auxiliary equipment. Maintains all
equipment in a safe operating manner and in accordance with the
manufacturer’s requirements. Requires skills and knowledge of
mechanical maintenance, welding, as well as troubleshooting
equipment problems. Equipment involves system piping, pumps, fans,
waterside/fireside boiler components, chemical/water treatment,
instrumentation, and controls.
Required Minimum Training and Experience: Requires a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Minimum of four (4) years’ experience in maintenance and repair of domestic high pressure, commercial and industrial district plant heating systems comprised of high-pressure multiple steam boilers with a total capacity of greater than 70,000 pounds per hour steam.
Special Requirements: With or without assistance, must be able to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects and job-related materials and/or equipment. The employee is required to climb stairs, use ladders and aerial lifts, work on rooftops, work from scaffolding and high areas using appropriate harness and tether equipment, and use ramps and aerial lift devices above ground in order to work above floor level and/or in pits. Requires the ability to discern colors accurately. Should operating conditions dictate, or in the event of multiple operator absences, the boiler mechanic will be assigned to a shift as needed.
