Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with the Vice Provost for Academic Excellence’s Office in academic policy development regarding undergraduates in formulating and assessing academic and career goals.
  • Advise Honors and Regents and Presidential Scholar students on curricular requirements, academic options, policies and procedures.
  • Conduct group and individual advising sessions and workshops for undergraduates and prospective students.
  • Prepare and present information sessions for small groups and large audiences.
  • Prepare detailed degree audits to assess student academic progress.
  • Assists in planning, implementing, and managing academic advising support programs and services.
  • Assists in the development and evaluation of academic advising policies and procedures.
  • Write a variety of correspondences and program descriptions and proposals.
  • Undertake scholarship and professional development appropriate to academic advising and/or Honors and/or area of scholarly and professional expertise.
  • Engage in service related to advising and curriculum on campus and in the profession.
  • Possible evening and/ or off-campus assignments
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Relevant Degree Field: Education, Psychology, or Liberal Arts discipline or related discipline.

Junior Specialist (Rank 2): A Master’s degree in Liberal Arts discipline or related discipline from a college or university of recognized standing, with work in a field related closely to the position involved; one year of experience as assistant, or its equivalent represented by successful practice in the appropriate field.

Assistant Specialist (Rank 3): A Master’s degree and, in addition to the Master’s degree, 30 credits of graduate study from a college or university of recognized standing and in a field relevant to the position involved; and at least three years of experience in the appropriate area at the next lower rank, or its equivalent.

Additional Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in liberal arts discipline or B.A. in an academic discipline and Master’s degree in higher education
  • One (1) year of effective college teaching, or directly transferable equivalency experience, such as college-preparatory teaching
  • 6 months minimum direct academic advising experience and knowledge, or closely related and equivalent directly transferable skills
  • Working knowledge of higher education and post-secondary curricula and academic requirements and pathways
  • Working knowledge of and current engagement with current research and curricula regarding advising issues and advising models
  • Knowledge of retention and graduation issues in higher education
  • Knowledge of and engagement with student development theory
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively facilitate groups
  • Must have strong computer skills, including working use of relevant technology such as Google suite, internet, e-mail, and word processing
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong organization and planning skills
  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, innovate, and see tasks to completion
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially as part of a team and uphold established policies and procedures

Desirable Qualifications

  • Knowledge of university wide academic programs
  • One (1) year or more of demonstrated experience in a managerial, coordinative/ supervisory position
  • Knowledge of academic experiences of incoming first year students
  • Direct working knowledge and experience with Honors Programs and high achieving students
  • Demonstrated familiarity with various forms of technology such as spreadsheet software
  • Commitment to working with a diverse multicultural student body
  • Commitment to a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning
  • Demonstrated engagement with and concern for student academic pathways and post graduate careers and goals.
