Position Summary

The Web Development and CMS Specialist position is housed within Strategic Communications and Public Affairs (StratComm) and takes direction from the Senior Director of Digital Communications and Analytics, with a dotted line to the Director of Information Technologies & Digital Initiatives, Web Services & Infrastructure. Through the dotted line structure, the Web Development and CMS Specialist will support StratComm-led web initiatives and university-wide brand alignment efforts. Responsibilities include administering, maintaining, and supporting SDSU's web infrastructure, including content management systems, hosting platforms, applications, databases, and user documentation.

The Web Development and CMS Specialist will work closely with the Information Technology Division and StratComm partners, as well as colleagues across the university community, to understand business needs and requirements for SDSU's web presence and continuity. The Web Development and CMS Specialist designs and develops websites, pages and templates, and contributes to the support of web projects, to include site migrations and other priority projects that StratComm manages. The Web Development and CMS Specialist directly supports the ongoing university-wide integration of Omni CMS content management system and is a collaborator in the Addressing Accessibility Requirements Project and Accessibility Technology Initiative (ATI) projects. The Web Development and CMS Specialist serves as a resource for the university web community, contributing to campus web meetings and working groups on accessibility, usability, standards, and also web communications and brand alignment. The Web Development and CMS Specialist will also provide guidance to outsourced development efforts and future hosting platforms as required. Duties include:

Web Management Support
  • Provides input and contributes to the updates and customization requirements for the existing content management system, working in close collaboration with members of the StratComm team, IT Division and both the web and communications community
  • Assist in identifying and creating custom components for the site's content management system (HTML & CSS)
  • Contributes to the maintenance and support of SDSU's web infrastructure, including content management systems
  • Contributes to web projects, such as site migrations; design and develop sites, pages and templates
  • Serve as a key resource for the university web community, contributing to campus web meetings and working groups on accessibility, usability, web standards and best practices
  • Provides additional subject matter expertise and training to technical and non-technical staff and campus community
  • Produce project scope/briefing documents to share with campus partners and colleagues to ensure transparency and tracking of outcomes
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of technology and offer consultation about ways to adopt technologies that support the web experience

Visual Identity System and Brand Consistency
  • Consult on and enforce SDSU's brand standards across websites and all communications channels
  • Assist in maintaining brand identity guidelines, including those around appropriate use of the university logo and logo system. Offer graphic design support specifically on marketing-related assets (e.g. fliers, digital displays, A-frames)
  • Offer support in developing and maintaining the web style guideline for the university
  • Support efforts to conceptualize, design and coordinate professional, creative and brand-aligned digital assets for email, website, promotions and social media

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits-eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated as non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

This position is approved for partial telecommuting with onsite work in San Diego.

Department Summary

Strategic Communications and Public Affairs (StratComm) serves as the official voice of San Diego State University and shares the President's vision, values and priorities while articulating a unified message about the university's unique story. Core service areas include crisis and issues management, marketing, news and media relations, social media, web and interactive communications, executive communications and visual communications, and government and community relations. We work together and with our partners across the institution and auxiliaries to promote the transformational diversity and impact of SDSU programs and achievements.

StratComm develops and oversees content for SDSU websites, NewsCenter, flagship social media channels, video productions, photography and the SDSU Magazine. The department also manages presidential communication; projects related to issues management and crisis communications; internal communication to faculty, students and staff; and external communications to the greater campus community, media representatives and the general public.

Another important arm of StratComm is government and community relations, an area responsible for building and maintaining relationships with constituent groups. The area also has responsibility for advising SDSU faculty and administrators on projects, initiatives and strategies designed to support collaborative engagement and dialogue with agencies and community members.

StratComm is also responsible for protecting and managing the SDSU brand through web and brand style guidelines along with graphic design services. StratComm leads the planning, coordination, and implementation of integrated marketing and communication strategies that support the mission of SDSU.

The mission of the Information Technology Division is to develop the long-term infrastructure, services and strategy necessary to support the University's mission of learning, discovery, and engagement. The IT Division has the stewardship responsibility for core IT assets on campus and the obligation to provide the services, training, and community building necessary to realize the benefits of those investments across the San Diego State University community.

Web Services and Infrastructure is responsible for the planning, development, implementation, and management of web services for San Diego State University. This position will play a key role in serving as an institutional leader in the planning, implementation, and ongoing improvement of web communications systems and processes developed by Web & Digital Communications.

Education and Experience

To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in technical information systems and application program packages is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Information Technology Consultant, depending on the nature of the position assignment, may include working knowledge of common software application packages, equipment platforms, reference database systems and sources, and training methods and a basic understanding of networks, data communication, and multimedia systems.

Key Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Three to five years of experience in web development, content management and digital/interactive design in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Experience overseeing third-party vendors, including but not limited to web developers, hosting providers, systems administrators and analysts
  • Experience with implementing, configuring, administering, and supporting web content management systems
  • Knowledge of front-end development languages and ability to hand code HTML and CSS
  • Knowledge of WCAG 2.0 AA web accessibility standards, including the use of semantic HTML and ARIA
  • Knowledge of mobile-first and responsive design principles using front-end frameworks and grid systems
  • Occasional weekend and evening work required

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,167 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Salary Range: $4,678 - $11,547
