Dean of the School of Engineering

Widener University invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the School of Engineering. The next Dean will have the opportunity to expand an already thriving School and sharpen its strategic focus by capitalizing on its current strengths and identifying new areas for growth and innovation.

Student success is at the heart of the School of Engineering – the faculty and staff at Widener are exceptionally and genuinely student centered. Leading a faculty that takes pride in their School’s intimate teaching and learning environment and are united in their focus on retaining and graduating undergraduate and graduate students across a diverse set of programs, the next Dean must be a strong advocate for a transformative student academic experience.

Faculty within the School of Engineering engage in state-of-the-art research, often with undergraduate and graduate students, in a variety of different areas, such as advanced manufacturing, tissue engineering, advanced control systems, nanoporous materials for energy/environmental issues, and smart monitoring of transportation infrastructure to name just a few. Faculty publish their work in highly regarded journals and successfully compete for funding from a variety of sources, including federal and state agencies, foundations, and corporate partners. The next Dean will have the opportunity to support the School’s exceptional students, faculty, and staff by providing personal leadership and attracting the resources necessary to continue and expand on the School’s mission.

Given Widener’s focus on the practical application of knowledge grounded in the liberal arts, the next Dean of the School of Engineering will be a bridge-builder with a proven ability to connect with both external and internal partners. The Dean will have the opportunity to maintain and build upon relationships that benefit the mission of the School while also engaging the greater Philadelphia and Delaware regions and beyond through sponsored research programs, student capstone experiences, Co-Op’s, internships, and custom-designed training programs for employers. In keeping with the highly collaborative nature of the University, the Dean will further deepen the School’s current partnerships with the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Health and Human Services, the School of Business, the School of Nursing, and the two Schools of Law.

With its outstanding faculty and staff, thoughtful blend of in-demand academic programs, and fast-moving yet collegial culture, Widener's School of Engineering is well-positioned for the future. The University is deeply committed to upholding a diverse, inclusive, and equitable community for all and Widener Engineering has a long commitment to the advancement of STEM careers among women and minorities. The next Dean will continue to demonstrate how an inclusive and equitable School environment is a key driver of excellence and crucial to the School’s mission. As such, individuals from traditionally underrepresented communities are especially encouraged to apply.

The next Dean of the School of Engineering will build upon the School’s proud legacy of success—for the benefit of Widener’s curious and ambitious students and for the betterment of the world they will go on to lead.

In keeping with the spirit and values of Widener University, the next Dean of the School of Engineering will be a collaborative and entrepreneurial leader. They will have an outstanding record of accomplishments including a record of scholarship, research funding, and credentials commensurate with an appointment as a tenured full professor in an engineering discipline at Widener.
