Research Engineer I/II/III, Radio Frequency

About the Opportunity

Kostas Research Institute (KRI) at Northeastern University (NU) is seeking multiple highly motivated Radio Frequency (RF) Engineers to join a rapidly growing team. The RF Engineers will provide domain subject matter expertise across all projects at KRI, working as part of a team of research and development (R&D) engineers/scientists.

Responsibilities will include design, programming, and test of RF-based prototype systems using software defined radios (SDRs), waveform generators, and specialized test equipment such as high-powered amplifiers and high-speed RF data capture devices, as well as development and deployment of algorithms and methods for signal detection, classification, and identification, migration of software to FPGAs when performance requires, contribute to the design and implementation of RF subsystems, test and characterize performance of prototypes

The RF Engineer will work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams across the KRI consortium, consisting of academic and industry partners, to create solutions and prototypes for RF signal processing, machine learning, cognitive and distributed sensing/communication, global navigation satellite systems, resilient wireless communication networks, embedded systems and real-time signal processing solutions involving software-defined radios (SDRs), waveform generation, antenna characterization, electromagnetic interference, and RF modeling/simulation. A close working relationship with and support of KRI Senior R&D Engineers/Scientists for Department of Defense and industry contracts will be required.

KRI headquarters located at the NU Innovation Campus in Burlington, MA (ICBM), is home to one-of-a-kind research and test facilities for conducting activities related to cognitive and distributed RF signal processing and machine learning, unmanned and autonomous system technologies. State-of-the-art facilities include the (a) Expeditionary Cyber and Unmanned Aerial Systems (ECUAS) Laboratory, a flexible and configurable state-of-the-art facility with indoor and outdoor test ranges, including a large anechoic chamber to test aerial and ground systems, as well as other devices such as antennas, sensors, and communications equipment; (b) Colosseum, the world's most powerful wireless network emulator that enables rapid prototyping and testing of advanced AI-enabled RF signal processing and machine learning solutions for cognitive and distributed sensing, wireless communication and networking solutions in complex RF operational scenarios; (c) Materials & Devices Laboratory, a state-of-the-art facility focusing on the development of high performance RF magnetic materials and composites, magnetic-based devices, energy storage materials, and processes for integration/incorporation of magnetic materials onto RF, high power, semiconductor, and power generation applications.

Education
  • BS in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering, MS or PhD preferred depending on level. KRI supports tuition waivers at NU for individual classes and degrees.
  • Relevant experience (3+ years is preferred) with rank/salary being commensurate with experience and education.
