Department Chair of the Department of Sport Management

 

Syracuse University is seeking a Department Chair of the Department of Sport Management in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. The successful candidate will qualify for an appointment at the rank of Associate or full Professor. Primary responsibilities include providing administrative oversight, vision, and leadership for diverse undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

 

The program offers a B.S. degree in Sport Management, B.S. in Sport Analytics, M.S. in Sport Venue and Event Management, CAS in Sport Analytics, and online M.S. in Sport Analytics. Additionally, the program will offer a joint degree with the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in Esport Communications and Management in August 2023, pending approval from the NYSED.

 

Required Qualifications

An earned doctorate in sport management or a related terminal degree. A record of strong administrative experience. Demonstrated teaching competence and scholarly accomplishment commensurate with an appointment with tenure is required.

 

Job Specific Qualifications

The department is interested in candidates who have demonstrated commitment to excellence by providing leadership in teaching, research, or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. Administrative experience, knowledge of the SASPE/NASSM accreditation process, establishing sport-based partnerships and having strong sport industry practitioner experience is preferred. Appointment to faculty rank is based on appropriate level of scholarship, teaching, and administrative duties.

 

Responsibilities

This position will oversee, counsel, and manage faculty and professional staff. Duties will include being a direct liaison as chair along with the Dean to a 30-member advisory council of industry leaders and executives; establishing programmatic goals and strategic planning; serving as contributing member of College’s Dean’s administrative cabinet; fostering strong communications outreach; teaching and advising students; supporting a robust research program; cultivating fundraising and development relationships with prospective donors. The successful candidate will also collaborate with other University academic units, the Department of Athletics, and local, regional, national, and international sport organizations

 

In addition to teaching, the successful candidate may conduct individual and collaborative research relative to one’s field of interest; become an active participant in scholarly activities and civic engagement; foster a strong experiential learning-based platform for over a dozen student organizations; cultivate industry-based partnerships to foster research opportunities and provide student engagement; and effectively oversee other responsibilities associated with being a department chair.
