Position Description:
POSITION SUMMARY

This faculty position is a full-time, 100% FTE (10 Months) Tenure Track position as Instructor of Biology (Physiology) in the Division of Math & Science located at San Jose City College.

Assignment may include day and evening responsibilities.

This position is represented by the San Jose/Evergreen Federation of Teachers, AFT 6157.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Teach Biology courses at all levels of learning (allied-health, majors, and/or non-majors) by communicating subject matter clearly and effectively.

2. Coordinate with Biology Lab Technicians and Biology faculty to streamline lab schedules and purchase requests.

4. Facilitate assessment and tracking of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) each semester.

5. Teach courses in assigned discipline by communicating subject matter clearly and effectively.

6. Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles.

7. Demonstrate commitment to professional development, including but not limited to activities such as: participation in professional conferences, workshops, seminars, membership in professional organizations, research projects, publishing academic work, participation in statewide committees or organizations, etc.

8. Demonstrate sensitivity in working with students and staff of diverse racial, ethnic, academic and socio economic backgrounds, sexual orientation, and disabilities by showing respect for differences and the dignity of others.

9. Participate in faculty responsibilities such as: course and curriculum development and review, student learning outcomes and assessment, program review, committees, research and special projects as needed in the discipline/department or district.

10. Attend and participate in department, division and college meetings and keep posted office hours.

11. Meet record keeping obligations on time, e.g. grades, census, reports, rosters, textbook orders, and requisitions.

12. Maintain and provide current course syllabi as required by California Education Code and Board policy.

13. Foster a professional work and learning environment.

14. Perform other duties as required by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Required Qualifications:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Master’s in any Biological Science

OR

Bachelor’s in any Biological Science AND Master’s in Biochemistry, Biophysics, or Marine Science

OR

*The Equivalent

Desired Qualifications:
Desired Qualifications:

1. Ph.D. in Biology, with emphasis on human biological systems; or Ph.D. in Science Education.

2. Excellent academic background in Biology.

3. Demonstrated experience teaching college-level Physiology courses.

4. Demonstrated experience with current pedagogy and teaching practices, including use of technology, online teaching, and familiarity with Canvas or other Learning Management Systems.

5. Demonstrated experience in effectively teaching college-level learners from diverse backgrounds.

6. Physiology/Biology related research, work and/or grant experience.

7. Experience in active learning techniques and/or other current science education best practices.

8. Experience in assessing instructional practices to inform ongoing improvement.

9. Experience in successful course curriculum development, and commitment to working with colleagues from other disciplines using interdisciplinary strategies to develop courses and programs to enhance student learning.

10. Willingness to share in departmental duties including, but not limited to, program review, data gathering/reporting, participation on hiring committees, adjunct faculty mentorship/training, and strategic planning.

11. Demonstrated experience with SLO assessment and program review and familiarity with the California Community College Guided Pathways Initiative.

12. Willingness to serve the broader campus community (e.g. committee involvement, faculty leadership, student clubs).

13. Bilingual abilities, desirable.

  Salary Range:
  $84,220 to $115,609 Entry Level Annual Salary (Academic Salary Schedule 2022-2023); Maximum Salary Potential $150,001. Note: Actual Salary placement is based on candidate's verified education and experience.
