Upper School (US) Technical Theater Teacher

Department:Upper School
Location:Washington, DC

Position Start Date:2023/2024 School Year

Status:Full-Time

Sidwell Friends, a co-educational Quaker day school with campuses in Washington, DC, and Bethesda, MD, seeks a full-time Technical Theater Teacher in the Arts Department for its Upper School division for the 2023-2024 school year.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate an ability to inspire and support students and will show a willingness to work collaboratively and independently in an environment committed to academic excellence, equity, justice, service, and students’ social emotional wellness. Additionally, this candidate will be committed to fostering and overseeing a safe learning and working environment in all production spaces.

Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in a theater-related field (master’s degree preferred). Experience as a Stage Manager, Technical Director, and Theater Production Manager are required. This person should have experience working with students in grades 9-12. An appreciation for adolescents and a sense of humor are also essential.

The position requires a close working relationship with the Upper School Theatre teacher/director, and a willingness to think creatively about integration of the acting/tech sides of theater education. Main position duties: teach Tech Theater classes where students gain knowledge of all aspects of Technical Theater, supervise experts contracted for specialized elements of production (carpentry, set painting, sound design, etc.), advise an after school student Tech Club, supervise student Tech crews, manage physical production systems in multiple Arts Center spaces, serve as liaison with subcontractors, attend after-school rehearsals and production meetings for each show (3-4 shows per year), and serve as on-site host/technical expert for various assemblies/concerts/lectures/etc. in performance spaces.

Flexibility in scheduling will be required to accommodate evening and weekend rehearsals and performances, based on production needs throughout the year.

Teaching positions at Sidwell Friends School are campus-based; therefore, this position requires teaching in person. This position begins in August 2023.

As a condition of employment, all employees who are employed with the school are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and able to provide proof of such vaccination. To make application for a medical or religious exemption, please contact the human resources department.

Interested candidates should upload a cover letter, resume, statement of teaching philosophy, and contact information for three references via our online application.
