DEAN FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, COMPUTER SCIENCE, AND ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGIES

Lakeland Community College is in the final phases of planning and design for a $14.2 million renovation and expansion of the Engineering Building that includes $2 million in equipment purchases and upgrades. Construction will begin Fall 2023. The Dean for ITCS and Engineering Technologies plays a key role in implementation decisions as well as program planning for the expansion. Lakeland is currently included on three Intel grants; this position works closely on the grants and with faculty to ensure deliverables are met. In support of the Engineering Building renovation, the College is in the process of completing a multi-year strategic plan for Engineering Technologies. In the area of Information Technology and Computer Science, the college recently completed construction of a state-of-the-art cybersecurity lab for the Cybersecurity program which has been recognized as a Center for Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense by the National Security Agency.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Dean for Information Technology, Computer Science (ITCS) and Engineering Technologies provides leadership for the ITCS and Engineering Technologies division. The position is responsible for academic leadership for the division including oversight of new and ongoing academic programs, non-academic programs, credit and non-credit programming, and supervision of faculty, administrators and staff assigned to the division. RESPONSIBILITIES:                                                                              

Programs - Provide leadership in establishing and working towards goals and objectives for the courses, certificates, degrees, programs, and activities of the division, aligning them with the College’s overall strategic plan. Actively support faculty working on curriculum and program development.  Seek out opportunities for growth, transfer, and partnership with other colleges and universities. Work with community advisory committees as needed. Work with local business and industry to ensure workforce education and training needs are being met.

Personnel - Chair search committees for full-time faculty hiring, oversee the hiring process for division staff members and recommend individuals for employment.  Support faculty by serving as a sounding board for challenging situations with students or others, providing guidance and soliciting help from other College departments on their behalf as needed.  Support instructional departments’ efforts to attract, hire, orient, and retain part-time faculty.  Encourage and support staff/faculty development. Evaluate personnel in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement and/or College policy, recommending retention or dismissal as appropriate.  Manage within the parameters of the collective bargaining agreement between the College and the full-time faculty. Support full- and part-time faculty in their work by providing timely information about College initiatives and working collaboratively with faculty to address new initiatives.

Instruction - Supervise development of semester class schedules, assignments of faculty, ordering of textbooks, and other tasks associated with delivery of instruction by the division.  Respond to faculty and student concerns.

Budget - Confer with faculty, program directors and others to develop annual budget proposal.  Oversee the division budgets.

Accreditation and Quality Initiatives – Support the efforts of the division to meet requirements and prepare reports as required by the college and/or accrediting agencies.  Serve as a resource with respect to identifying and implementing quality improvements.  Assist the college and division in gathering and analyzing data to support quality initiatives and division operations.

College-wide projects - Actively participate on committees and task forces; work with other College departments on projects of mutual interest; develop and encourage synergy between departments and divisions; and integrate and promote the division’s engagement with College-wide initiatives such as the College’s Strategic Plan and the College’s State Completion Plan.

General - Represent the division within the College, to the local community, and to the general public. Oversee and develop physical facilities assigned to areas of responsibility.  Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Training and Experience

  • Master's degree in one of the disciplines of the division, doctorate preferred.
  • Three years of full-time teaching experience in one of the disciplines is required.  Experience teaching at the adjunct level is also preferred.
  • Two years of administrative experience in higher education preferred.
  • A preference for the teaching and administrative experience to be at the community college level.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:  1) recent developments, best practices and current trends in higher education and community colleges; in particular an awareness of workforce development best practices, project based learning, alternative delivery formats, assessment, globalization of curriculum, OER, performance based funding, etc. 2) data informed decision making techniques and quality improvement initiatives applicable to higher education and community colleges in particular; 3) external sources of funding including grants and foundations.

Well-developed skills including: 1) planning, organizing and budgeting; 2) supervising and leading; 3) communicating verbally and in writing.

Ability (and willingness) to:  1) engage others and work effectively with a wide range of internal and external constituents; 2) collaborate within and across departments and divisions to identify creative solutions to problems; 3) multi-task and prioritize work and interpret and apply federal and state legislation, accreditation standards, and College policies and procedures.

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: 

This is a 12-month, full-time position assigned to pay grade 8 of the administrative salary schedule and includes full college benefits (See Total Compensation for Administrative Staff).  Information pertaining to employment at Lakeland is available on the college’s Human Resources webpage.  This position is eligible to work remotely for a negotiable portion of each week, subject to Provost approval. The college reimburses for relocation from outside the greater Cleveland area to a maximum of 10% of the starting annual salary.
