The College of Arts and Sciences (https://college.indiana.edu/) at Indiana University in Bloomington invites applications for a tenured Associate or Full Professor position at the interdisciplinary intersection of cognition and literary study to begin in Fall 2023 or 2024. The successful candidate will hold joint appointments in the Department of English and the Program in Cognitive Science. IU has long been an international leader in research on cognition across humans, animals, and artificial systems, and in the study of intelligence as it manifests in embodied cognition. The Department of English has long nurtured strengths in poetics, narratology, stylistics, creative writing, and rhetoric, the application of cognitive methodologies to the analysis of cultural artifacts, and the study of literature in relation to epistemic transformations in the understanding of human consciousness. This hire builds on existing strengths to position IU at the forefront of new research innovations in our understanding of how human cognition and verbal aesthetics and expression interact.  We seek candidates interested in collaborating with faculty across the College (for instance, in Linguistics and the Media School) and the Bloomington campus (the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering), who will engage with the work of several research centers, including the Experimental Humanities Lab, the Institute for Digital Arts and Humanities, and the Center for Theoretical Inquiry in the Humanities.

Applicants must have a PhD in English, comparative literature, cognitive science, psychology, informatics, or a related field, and a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and professional experience appropriate for a tenured professorship at IU Bloomington, with robust commitment to the interdisciplinary focus of this joint appointment. We expect to hire a full or associate professor, but exceptional candidates at the assistant professor level may be considered. To advance scholarly innovation and excellence, we especially welcome candidates who will broadly increase the university’s diversity, equity, and inclusion through their lived experience, research, teaching, and/or mentoring. Candidates should be able to work effectively in a team environment. Review of applications will begin March 3, 2023, and will continue until the position is filled.

To apply, submit a letter of application describing research and teaching activities, CV, names of 3 references, and a 1–2 page diversity statement to https://indiana.peopleadmin.com/postings/16580. Letters of recommendation may be requested later.
