Overview
The Media Relations Specialist plays a crucial role on the media relations team in the Office of Communications as it works to advance Princeton University’s priorities through productive, professional relationships with journalists. The Media Relations Specialist works closely with colleagues across campus to develop and disseminate accurate, timely information that allows journalists to accurately represent the University in their coverage. The Media Relations Specialist plans and executes proactive outreach to media; responds to media inquiries in a timely way; and supports media relations in crisis situations.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented with strong writing, organizational, and interpersonal skills; and enthusiasm for a collaborative workplace. The Media Relations Specialist must also be proactive and able to see tasks through to completion; have the ability to juggle multiple, often high-pressure deadlines; and possess an interest in journalism and media engagement.
Responsibilities
- Monitoring and responding to incoming media requests
- Planning and executing proactive media outreach
- Researching and developing materials including messaging points, briefings and news releases
- Coordinating media interviews, campus visits and media outreach
- Supporting crisis response communications
- Maintaining and expanding media contact database
Qualifications
Essential Qualifications:
- At least two years of experience working in a public relations firm, news media company or equivalent professional environment.
- Associate of arts degree or higher
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills in an environment with people from a variety of backgrounds.
- Moderate to advanced skills using PowerPoint, PhotoShop or equivalent presentation and photo/graphic editing software
- Knowledge of and familiarity with higher education and Princeton University.
- Knowledge and familiarity with news media and social media platforms.
