Function of the Unit

The overall plan of SDSU's Building Bridges between Community and Careers: A New Type of HSI (here on referred to Building Bridges) is a project whose aim is to position SDSU Imperial Valley (SDSU-IV) campus to be instrumental in addressing the community and regional workforce needs by facilitating pathways through San Diego State University (SDSU) to successful careers in Nursing, Public Health, and STEM education. The overall goal is to increase the number of students who enter careers that meet the region's workforce needs by earning globally competitive degrees in Healthcare and STEM education. The proposed program aims to achieve this goal by leveraging the regional unique cultural wealth of a bordertown (US-Mexico and CA-AZ) student population, to facilitate greater educational access with an approach that is culturally and linguistically affirming.

This program will strengthen and build capacity in the institution's ability to facilitate careers in Healthcare and STEM by adapting and implementing high-quality evidence-based practices and professional and workforce development activities that include: 1) outreach and recruitment, 2) undergraduate research experiences (UREs), 3) enrichment activities (i.e., workshops, panels, information sessions, and skills development), 4) culturally affirming wrap-around student support, and 5) multi-dimensional mentoring approaches.

All of the project activities and services are grounded in research and best practices for improving student engagement, persistence, retention, and graduation.

Purpose of the Position

The Program Coordinator will meet regularly and communicate daily with the PI(s) and will be responsible for interfacing and working with the Program Evaluator to collect student data. The position is responsible for supporting daily administration; implementation of fiscal policies and program development direction; formulation and monitoring of student selection policies; research project coordination; academic and career advising of scholars. The Program Coordinator also supports other staff in the recruitment of Latinx, low-income, college students; design and implementation of activities; support for mentorship component; initiation and maintenance of record keeping for grant purposes; supporting the implementation of summer bridge; and development of partnerships with community collaborators. The Program Coordinator will also maintain communication with the collaborating student services programs (i.e., Student Success Center, MSLC, CASA) to monitor student career development and academic progress.

Specific Duties

Program Management (70%)

  • Support the PI(s) in the implementation of program activities and oversight.
  • Work with PI(s) and support campus staff to manage program budget, and miscellaneous expenses along with payments to guest speakers, workshop facilitators, seminar presenters, and/or honorariums.
  • Monitor foundation accounts; record expenditures, and prepare all paperwork for any requests. Communicating with the foundation Account administrator and budget analysts for direction and accuracy.
  • Develop, coordinate, maintain and evaluate the academic schedules, requirements, and progress of student assistants and participants.
  • Work closely with the program evaluator to collect, measure and analyze data to measure program outcomes.
  • Participate in steering committee activities.
  • Assist Associate Dean in recruitment and hiring of grant-funded adjunct/lecturers
  • Manage program and attend meetings in absence of PI(s).

  • Student Services (10%)
  • Help identify internship, academic year/summer research, and graduate school opportunities.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to host activities and workshops.
  • Collaborate with other campus programs and services (including but not limited to: CoS Student Success Center, MSLC, MESA, C&PS) to help assist students in all needed areas.

  • Other Duties and Responsibilities as assigned (30%)
  • Maintain a close working relationship with Co-PIs, Outreach Coordinator, Retention Specialist, and Dean of Students to ensure the successful participation of STEM Pathway students.
  • Maintain working relationships with students, industry, and off-campus partners to ensure the success of the program.
  • Oversee the website to reflect the current program participants, and activities and to help recruit future students.
  • Develop and disseminate brochures for STEM Pathways to promote and recruit.

  • Qualifications

  • Experience/Education
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physical or behavioral science, higher education, or related field.
  • 2 years of experience in administering student support programs.

  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in higher education, public administration, student services, or a STEM discipline.
  • Demonstrated management skills, knowledge, and experience. The Program Coordinator’s role will be to assist the PI(s).
