Overview
Under direction, incumbents perform advanced technical research and analysis in a laboratory and/or field environment. Provides technical support and/or experimental research requiring scientific knowledge from the appropriate coursework or skills acquired through work experience (for example previously as RAII). Instructions/policies/procedures and research protocols are followed independently, using discretion, judgment and interpretation. This level frequently provides lead direction and/or supervision to lower-level Research Assistants, Student/Graduate Assistants, and on occasion, clerical staff.

Examples of research duties at this level include overseeing the day-to-day tasks of an evaluation team by coordinating schedules, providing training, preparing reports and providing daily updates to the Research Manager/Specialist. Provides specialized techniques/running experiments in the laboratory; arranges for equipment repairs and oversees laboratory stocks and solutions. May assist with literature reviews and administrative tasks in support of research activities.

This is an advanced-level position for incumbents who have completed upper division coursework or have relevant work experience in a research environment. In addition to the abilities required for the Research Assistant I & II levels, the RAIII must be able to independently apply advanced research methods,procedures and analysis; perform more advanced mathematical calculations, interpret and apply research protocols, and perform advanced research activities requiring interpretation.



Responsibilities
The research lab will study how non-cancer cells influence breast cancer progression, and the molecular biology of cancer disparities.

Initial duties of this position will require:
  • Maintaining EHS/ chemical compliance and inventory
  • Managing ordering of materials and equipment
  • Maintaining an organized lab space (including inventory)
  • Obtaining quotes for different equipment or reagents
  • Preparing buffers
  • Genotyping animals and assisting with mouse colony maintenance
  • Learning and applying techniques related to mammalian tissue culture, protein methods such as western blotting, immunostaining such as immunofluorescence or immunohistochemistry, experimental design, and troubleshooting
  • Communicating with TM and other lab members
  • Training others on techniques in the future
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION

  • Completion of sufficient upper division coursework

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE

  • OR -Equivalent of two years full time progressively responsible related experience in lieu of coursework.


PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
  • 6 months experience working in a research lab/wet lab setting.
