Overview
Under the supervision of the Digital Editor, the KPBS South Bay Engagement Producer works to deepen our newsroom's connection with the South Bay communities. This position will work with our reporters, producers, and editors as well as other departments on projects that expand the station's community engagement and outreach efforts with a focus on digital formats, mediums and platforms. KPBS is transforming into an organization that recognizes the potential and importance of virtual and digital communities; this role plays a key role in those efforts to grow as an inclusive news organization, engaging with new and diverse audiences.

The South Bay Engagement Producer will have the opportunity to contribute to coverage across all the three platforms: Radio, TV and Digital.

This position is part of the SAG-AFTRA bargaining unit with KPBS.


Responsibilities
The South Bay Engagement Producer is responsible for but not limited to:



Production (40%)
  • Identify and produce engaging news content highlighting South Bay voices, narratives, missing or mis-information to address the community’s information needs.
  • Optimize, produce, and report stories that result from community outreach and engagement.
  • Flag and follow up on community-sourced tips.
  • Host and moderate conversations on topics of impact with diverse groups online and in-person.


  • Strategy (30%)
  • Craft and manage callouts, surveys and other crowdsourcing tools in collaboration with reporters and producers.
  • Deliver audience insights and research on groups most affected by the newsroom's coverage.
  • Collaborate with the KPBS Digital team to learn about and develop online engagement tools to better serve and interact with our South Bay audience.
  • Provide training and ongoing assistance on community engagement tools and strategy for reporters and producers.
  • Stay up-to-date on emerging and current technologies


  • Project Management (25%)
  • Initiate and oversee multiple outreach efforts for the newsroom on various platforms and formats (i.e., kpbs.org, social media, newsletters, and virtual or in-person events)
  • Work with our newsroom and other departments on projects to engage diverse audiences with a focus on digital products and platforms.
  • Establish systems to further expand our reach and strengthen our relationship with our South Bay audience.
  • Cultivate community connections with an emphasis on new partnerships with BIPOC community groups and media.



  • Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

    For example: Participate in station on-air fundraising activities, and make appearances for KPBS community building events and other or related activities. Additional duties may be assigned at the discretion of the supervisor.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    Level I:
    • Knowledge of journalistic techniques, materials, and equipment used in news production.
    • Knowledge of a full range of production techniques including graphics, television, video editing methods and equipment and/or a basic knowledge of HTML/CSS where relevant for digital-specific news producer positions.
    • Basic computer skills to operate Newsroom Computer System such as Inception, and video editing software system such as Adobe Premiere.
    • Ability to consistently write with AP/Broadcast style, structure and grammar.
    • Ability to write on at least one platform (audio, video, or web) and the willingness to develop an ability on one other or both platforms.
    • Ability and willingness to work varied shifts, and to respond to breaking news as needed.
    • Writing and editing skills, including a foundation in English grammar.
    • Ability to perform moderately complex technical work and produce daily news content.
    • Ability to interact/communicate effectively with co-workers and audience members on all relevant news mediums and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
    • Ability to display organization and manage time efficiently, meet deadlines, display detail orientation, and possess good judgment.
    • Ability to demonstrate a high level of cross-cultural sensitivity and strong interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to understand and follow posted work rules and procedures.
    • Ability to exercise limited judgment and discretion.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff members and students.


    Level II:

    All of those listed in Level I above, plus:
    • Demonstrated excellence in news judgment and ability to swiftly and accurately report breaking news on all platforms (audio, video and web).
    • Demonstrated strong producing skills with limited oversight.
    • Ability to lead coverage of daily general and breaking news stories on audio, video, or web and its distribution platforms (e.g. Social Media, Newsletters) efficiently and accurately.
    • Ability to work with the News and other departments to break, develop, and elevate stories that matter to the community.
    • Demonstrated ability to build data-driven interactive visual content (e.g. charts, maps) using tools such as DataWrapper and Flourish
    • Where relevant for digital-only positions, a proficient level skill in web design, coding and/or analytics
    • Ability to perform work requirements and with limited oversight.
    • Ability to regularly exercise judgment and discretion to interpret needs and make journalistic and production decisions.
    • Ability to work and coordinate with individuals at all levels within the newsroom and production in the development and execution of news content.


    Qualifications
    Minimum Education:
    • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent training and work in journalism.

    Minimum Experience: Level I
    • At least 2 years of progressively responsible or related experience in journalism along with basic news judgment, understanding of journalism ethics and the ability to swiftly and accurately report breaking news on all platforms.


    Minimum Experience: Level I
    • At least 4 years of progressively responsible or related experience in journalism along with basic news judgment, understanding of journalism ethics and ability to swiftly and accurately report breaking news on all platforms (ie audio, video and web).


    Preferred Qualifications & Skills:
    • Fluent in Spanish and English
    • Rooted connection to San Diego's South Bay region
    • Experience working with digital community engagement strategies and tools such as Hearken and TypeForm.
    • Experience as a news journalist, preferable in TV and/or radio.
    • Experience working in a newsroom
    • Experience using Grove (CMS)
    • Experience producing multimedia and/or knowledge of video and photo editing platforms.
    • Experience in online production, including writing, editing, graphic design, HTML, photography and audio and video production.
    • Journalistic Experience in public radio or television.
    • Reliable transportation, valid driver's license and proof of insurance required.
