Responsibilities
Assigning and Editing News 70%

The Editor works with the News Director, Senior News Producers, the Digital Editor and reporters to develop story ideas that cover issues with major impact in our audience’s lives; lively explainers that tell the story behind WHY a trend is happening, and breaking news. The Editor encourages enterprise reporting, and helps hone pitches and carefully selects stories that best match the KPBS news mission.

The Editor ensures writing is focused, spare, and conversational (if you wouldn’t speak it, don’t write it), at times irreverent, and audio and video for broadcast stories should move the narrative forward, allowing the writer to “get out of the way” of stories that appear to unfold spontaneously. The successful candidate will help reporters write with style and word economy, create audio-rich radio, write to the pictures in the video, and adapt stories creatively for the web, including but not limited to “top five” lists, interactive budget games, and useful election guides.

The Editor will ensure reporters start their stories on the website or social media, as warranted. The News Editor is responsible for the on-air and web news being timely, fair and accurate, and is always demanding high quality of our content and engagement, in collaboration with Senior News Producers, the Digital Editor and News Director.

The Editor contributes to daily news meetings and ensures KPBS is covering the top stories in San Diego every day, and contributes segment ideas for Midday Edition, Evening Edition, All Things Considered and Morning Edition.

Toward the end of the day, the Editor stacks the Inception rundown with newsroom stories and copy for the Morning Edition anchor, ensuring audio and copy is filed, checked and that intros are current and broadcast-ready. Includes hand-off notes regarding updates to watch for in the morning with links to where to find information.

In collaboration with the Senior News Producers and the Digital Editor, the Editor ensures that a multimedia approach to all stories is a priority in order to reach diverse KPBS audiences. Assigning and editing duties will periodically fall on weekends and evenings and as news coverage requires. The News Editor is a back-up for the Digital Editor, and vice versa.

Administration 20%

The News Editor helps implement the news division’s administrative processes in the Editor’s team areas, including personnel, productivity, and grant/donor reports. The Editor will alert the News Director to suggested spending priorities on staffing and equipment needs for the next fiscal year.

The Editor maintains news planning documents by updating with reporter activities, pitches and assignments, and upcoming news pegs. The Editor may compile and distribute daily rundowns of planned coverage for KPBS news partners, with the assistance of the Newsroom Administrator. The Editor apprises the News Director of errors and necessary corrections, audience feedback, and any high-stakes story situations that entail potential legal action, anonymous sourcing, or ethical issues.

The News Editor also coordinates stories shared with KPBS news partners, including the PBS NewsHour, NPR, and our various projects.

Station and Community Outreach: 10%

The Editor maintains an ongoing effective relationship with various KPBS departments, and local communities. The Editor will be asked to make appearances at various KPBS events as appropriate. They will participate in on-air fundraising for the station.
