Position Description: The Division of Neonatology, Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington (UW) School of Medicine is seeking a board-certified, or board eligible Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine physician at the Clinical Associate Professor, or Clinical Professor level position on the Clinician faculty track.  This full-time position will also hold the title as Neonatology Medical Director for the Virginia Mason/Franciscan (VM/FH) Health Neonatology System located in Tacoma, WA region.

The base salary range for this position will be: Clinical Associate Professors MD $20,150 - $30,225 per month ($241,800 - $362,700 annually), Clinical Professors MD $22,965 - $34,448 per month ($275,580 - $413,376 annually) commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.  This range is inclusive of base salary provided through the Children’s University Medical Group (CUMG) practice plan, in addition to base salary provided by the University. Please note that only compensation provided by the University is included in University benefit determinations and calculations. Compensation provided by Children’s University Medical Group (CUMG) practice plan may provide eligibility for separate benefits offered by that organization.

Other compensation associated with this position may include incentive through Children’s University Medical Group practice plan. Additional administrative responsibilities may be offered to a specific candidate with appropriate experience and qualifications which may result in an administrative supplement (ADS).

Clinical Associate Professors, and Clinical Professors hold annual appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1 – June 30) and may be reappointed to subsequent annual terms.  Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. The anticipated start date is Winter 2023.

The regional neonatal coverage includes the level III NICU at St. Joseph Medical Center and multiple surrounding level II NICUs (St. Michael, St. Anne, and St. Francis).

Responsibilities of the VM/FH NICU Medical Director will include:

  1. Provide and supervise neonatal inpatient and consultative care within the VM/FH system, including extreme premature infants
  2. Coordinate and align the administrative and clinical activities of the VM/FH neonatology system with the UW Division of Neonatology
  3. Participate in continuing education programs, such as M&M rounds, Journal club discussions.
  4. Participate, lead and establish collaborative protocols in alignment with the UW Division of Neonatology
  5. Lead and participate in collaborative QI/research activities of the UW Division of Neonatology, such as the Vermont Oxford Network (VON).
  6. Involvement in NICU development, growth potential, and design across the VM/FH system
  7. Participate in teaching a variety of learners, including medical residents and Advanced Practice Providers
  8. Support the missions of UW and VM/FH Hospital System.

The main level III of VM/FH is in Tacoma, WA (St. Joseph Medical Center). This facility is a Level III NICU with approximately 4100 deliveries/year with an average daily census of 20-25.  It is staffed by a core of UW Neonatologists, APP, and Pediatric residents. St. Joseph Medical Center NICU is part of the Vermont-Oxford Network and committed to high quality and safety. Night call coverage is from home.

The surrounding level II facilities are also located near Tacoma, WA, and are staffed by Neonatal Hospitalists or Advanced Practice Providers.

Qualifications: The requirements, and positive factors for consideration of an ideal candidate for the Medical Director position are:

  1. Applicants must have an MD or DO, or MD/DO combined, or foreign equivalent.
  2. Board-eligible (BE) or board-certified (BC) in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine
  3. Experience in medical direction leadership.
  4. Experience in quality improvement methodology

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of a foreign (non-U.S.) medical school must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
