Job Description

The Director of Alumni and Referring Practitioner Relations reports to the Assistant Dean of Advancement for the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, the Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations at Virginia Tech, and the Dean of Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. This position will serve as a critical member of the college’s Advancement team, working collaboratively with Advancement leadership to pursue and promote the overall institutional goals and objectives related to communication, fundraising and alumni engagement.

The Director of Alumni and Referring Practitioner Relations will serve as the chief alumni engagement officer in the college and will provide strategic leadership for the college’s alumni advancement efforts. This position will also serve as the primary liaison for referring DVM practitioners in Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia and will provide strategic outreach, promotion and assessment to drive referrals and caseload for the college’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) in Blacksburg, VA, the college’s Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Hospital (EMC) in Leesburg, VA, and the college’s Animal Cancer Care and Research Center (ACCRC) in Roanoke, VA.

The Director of Alumni and Referring Practitioner Relations will actively serve as a liaison to professional associations that include the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association, the Maryland Veterinary Medical Association, and the West Virginia Veterinary Medical Association. The position will supervise a mid-level support position and work collaboratively with members of the college’s Advancement team to pursue and promote the overall institutional goals and objectives related to communications, fundraising, and alumni engagement.

Required Qualifications

• DVM or equivalent degree
• Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
• Experience in volunteer management, professional/educational programming and/or alumni activities
• Must be willing to work evenings/weekends and travel extensively as needed
• Strong group presentation skills

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Regional and national travel required for the purposes of conducting field research, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, which may include overnights and weekends.

Must have the ability and willingness to travel utilizing standard, commercial, and/or personal modes of transportation.

Ability to work nights and weekends, and participation in college or university programs when possible.

Preferred Qualifications

• Clinical experience
• Experience and understanding of Advancement best practices in a complex university setting
• Knowledge of the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine and its programs
