Summary/Objective

The incumbent is responsible for assisting in preventive and corrective maintenance work on a variety of vehicles and various types of grounds equipment. The incumbent must be able to work independently and cooperatively on team-based assignments in order to support the mission of Vehicle Maintenance, which is to effectively operate and maintain safe, functional clean, efficient, and attractive vehicles and equipment.

Essential Functions
  1. Assist Fleet Mechanics in the performance of preventive maintenance, safety inspections, daily bus inspections, and conduct emergency and routine repairs on university fleet and equipment. Responsible for assuring that all vehicles and equipment are available when needed to meet departmental and university mission.
  2. Completes necessary processes in support of departmental policies and procedures in order to document all assigned work through utilization of a CMMS system (AIM). Tracks time and attendance in both AIM and AU portal.
  3. Drives all university vehicles through the District of Columbia vehicle inspection and emissions program, performs internal and external processes necessary for vehicle tag renewal and payment, coordinates activities with Supervisor of Vehicle Maintenance, and/or lead Fleet Mechanic
  4. Responsible for the overall cleanliness of the vehicle maintenance shop to ensure a safe work area to perform all duties, also responsible for the cleaning all university buses.
  5. Supports grounds maintenance in response to emergency snow removal through assisting in the installation and adjusting snowplows, salt spreaders, and snow sweepers. Assures that all equipment is ready for emergency snow removal. Works as snowplow and equipment operator as needed in order to assure that university campuses are safe and accessible during snow and ice conditions.
  6. Attends transportation related training sessions to ensure that incumbents abilities, and information are current with all federal regulations. Attend manufactures approved training on various bus repairs, equipment repairs, and vehicle repairs.

Required Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Graduate of technical /vocational school.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • This position requires a good working knowledge of repairing, servicing, and operating all types of buses, trucks, automobiles, vans industrial and grounds equipment; such as tractors, sweepers, street cleaners, electric carts and domestic automobiles.
  • The incumbent must be able to use a tire changing machine, and understand safety operation of vehicle jacks and liftThis position requires a great deal of physical exertion.
  • The incumbent must be able to stoop, bend and work under vehicles, depending on the type of work and type of equipment is being serviced.
  • This position holder must also be able to perform heavy lifting.
  • Manual dexterity for use of tools is required.
