Job Description

The Executive Director of Content Strategy (ED) is the lead content strategist, working in partnership to mine the campus and University constituencies for dynamic stories and content. The ED plays a central and strategic role within the Marketing Division, identifying outstanding opportunities to advance the University’s brand and marketing efforts through storytelling. A strategic dot-connector and relationship builder, the ED works closely with the Marketing Strategy team to deeply understand target audiences, to ensure we are reaching them through the right channel, at the right time, with the right content. The ED has three primary roles: 1. Developing and implementing a goal-advancing strategy for researching, gathering and producing channel-agnostic content 2. Working collaboratively across the various channels to bring our brand to life in a consistent, cohesive and compelling way and 3. Leading day to day operations of a dynamic, high performing, content team. The ED is Editor-in-Chief of the Syracuse University magazine. Serves as a member of the CMO¿s leadership team and has additional leadership responsibilities within the team.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 12 years of relevant professional experience, demonstrating strong leadership skills and a strong grasp of modern marketing practices. A minimum of 7-10 years in a content strategy leadership role, leading practice development within teams, with specific experience with content marketing platforms.

Job Specific Qualifications

Exceptional strategic & creative sensibilities. A proven track-record of experience driving integrated marketing & content strategy to advance business goals. Excellent experience directing content operations from concept to completion & building infrastructure. Must possess strong ability to write /create in a persuasive, emotional manner necessary to create action by audience/customer/end-user while maintaining & enhancing the University’s brand identity. Ability to understand how to leverage multiple channels to land meaningful narratives to support a holistic expression of the brand. Exceptional messaging, writing/editing skills, graphic design sensibilities, & knowledge of layout techniques for print materials. Ability to work under tight deadlines w/ attention to detail. Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to communicate clearly & passionately, both in writing & verbally. Ability to navigate w/in a large org structure. Strong oral & written communication, organizational & problem-solving skills. Strong knowledge of MS Office( Excel, Word, and Outlook) and PM systems. Experience with web CMS systems. Desire & proven ability to be continually learning/updating & working knowledge of latest systems. Higher education experience desired.

Responsibilities

Lead day to day operations of dynamic, high performing, content team. Serves as a key strategist and important dot-connector, understanding multiple strategies to be purposeful in the identification of potential content opportunities. Ensures synergistic approach to working with the Marketing Strategy team to identify an audience-first approach to content identification. The ED develops repeatable, systematic approaches to identifying dynamic, timely and relevant contents with a methodology that leads to content that performs well with constituencies, ultimately advancing University goals. The ED of Content oversees the team in charge of creating and maintaining an overarching editorial calendar and style guide. Works in mutual partnership with content producers on other teams to ensure overarching calendar is maintained, up-to-date and coordinated. The ED works closely with the ED of Digital who is responsible for curating, producing and packaging digital content. The ED also works in partnership with the AVP of Creative to maximize content collection and ensure that the co-created plan for content gathering is effective and efficient.

Facilitates effective and regular editorial meetings to collaborate with other content teams responsible for packaging stories and content for digital channels and other purposes. Works in deep partnership with the schools/colleges, academic units and other divisions to find storytelling opportunities to bring our brand to life, advance marketing strategies and ultimately achieve organizational goals. Excellent collaborator, shares potential story ideas and leads discussions to ultimately help all teams responsible for content production in coordinating an effective and efficient approach to content collection and generation. . Ensures team is executing consistent strategy by identifying and producing content (through interviews and research), and writing and packaging for multiple uses. Partners with digital and multimedia content producers to share information and facts.

Editor-in-Chief of the Syracuse University Magazine. Responsible for ensuring magazine is executed from concept through completion. Works closely with partners to ensure milestones are met. Leads day to day operations of a team of writers, who can produce large volumes of strategic content for a variety of purposes.

Responsible for managing a team of writers. Demonstrates excellent addition to detail, fact-checking and accuracy of raw content. Establishes systematic approaches to cataloging raw and produced content and stories. Strong editing and storytelling skills. Ensures that content (both raw and final produced) is accurate, searchable and receives proper approvals. Nimble, responsive and flexible in reacting to new or timely content/storytelling opportunities. Helps communicate and coordinates with cross-functional teams to ensure we are gathering and quickly packaging and sharing timely and relevant stories of interest to key audiences.
