Non-Tenure-Track Lecturer - Illustration, Department of Art

Rowan University’s Department of Art seeks applications for a non-tenure track lecturer position in Illustration beginning in Fall 2023. We seek a dynamic, energetic illustrator/teacher with recognized professional achievement, demonstrating a significant track record of professional/illustrated publications, involvement in the field, and college level teaching experience. Candidate should be capable of taking a leadership role within the newly formed Illustration concentration, overseeing adjuncts, curriculum and advancing the program as the area grows. They should be dedicated to teaching at all undergraduate levels and have a broad understanding of the history of illustration and its influence on contemporary illustration practice and theory.

The successful candidate will teach introductory through advanced illustration courses that include a variety of traditional and digital techniques within the context of contemporary illustration practices. In addition to the primary assignments in illustration, the candidate may teach representational drawing or figure drawing as part of the foundation program taken by all art majors and some non-art majors, as well as digital painting and animation as they relate to the concentration. The successful candidate will be expected to encourage and form interdisciplinary partnerships within the College and University. The appointment is renewable based on programmatic needs and offers the opportunity for promotion to senior and master lecturer. An MFA or PhD in studio art is required. Evidence of 2-3 years post-graduate college teaching experience is expected.

We are seeking a collegial colleague who is passionate about teaching illustration and nurturing a vibrant and flexible studio culture within our department. Applicants should be committed to contemporary pedagogies that inspire each student's potential for introspection and awareness, creative thought, and artistic expression in a supportive environment. They must demonstrate a commitment to or record of working with and mentoring diverse students, faculty and groups (including race, gender, class, LGBTQIA+ identities, and/or disability rights).

The successful candidate will teach 12 credit-hours, which is 3 studio courses, per semester. The faculty lecturer will advise illustration students toward their senior thesis exhibitions, participate in curriculum development, and serve on departmental and college committees. Additional responsibilities may include collaborations with Department studio faculty from areas such as Graphic Design, Painting, Printmaking or Animation.

The Department of Art serves approximately 250 undergraduate studio art majors. Students are led to engage in an individual search for meaning and cultural representation through the development of strong visual skills, critical thinking and an understanding of historical and social contexts. Illustration students’ ideas are rooted in the tradition of the visual arts, openly examined, challenged, and refined, as they are mentored toward freedom and discipline by exploring a wide range of aesthetic attitudes through the department’s flexible programing.

The Department of Art is one of six departments in the Ric Edelman College of Communication & Creative Arts that also includes Communication Studies, Journalism, Public Relations & Advertising, Radio, Television & Film, and Writing Arts. Edelman CCCA’s goal is to empower people to be storytellers, artists, critical thinkers, and engaged citizens. The college serves over 1900 majors through twelve BAs, two BFAs, and three MAs. Additionally, we house first-year writing and public speaking, which serve all Rowan students.

Essential Criteria:

Candidates must:

• Possess an MFA or PhD in Illustration or a closely related studio art field. Terminal degree is required at time of appointment.
• Have a record of effective teaching in illustration and related coursework at the college level.
• Be familiar with illustration strategy workflows, concepts, media, and techniques of contemporary artists/illustrators.
• Demonstrate a history of professional illustrated publications and achievement.
• Be willing to engage in service to the Department of Art, Edelman CCCA, and Rowan University.
• Be willing to engage in service to the wider professional community.
• A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
• Demonstrate a commitment to or record of working with and mentoring diverse students and faculty (such as race, gender, class, LGBTQIA+ identities, and/or disability rights).

NOTE: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the US, and the university will not sponsor an applicant for a work visa for this position.

Candidates should:

• Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as a team member.
• Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Have a record of successful collaboration across disciplines.
• Have experience developing new courses and curricula.
• Maintain and develop professional connections within the illustration industry and professional associations.
