Summary:
The University of Portland seeks a Manager for Academic Technology Services and Innovation. The Academic Technology Services and Innovation Manager supervises the Academic Technology Services and Innovation team at the University of Portland, whom support faculty and students with their technology needs to achieve academic success. Additionally, this role works closely with the Center for Teaching and Learning to engage with faculty and support the integration of technology into academic pedagogy and practices. This role ensures academic technologies meet the University's requirements for information security, privacy, accessibility, and academic quality. This position reports to the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and is a member of the Information Services leadership team.

    Responsibilities:
  • Manage a diverse team of technical professionals and lead them in development plans, support career objectives and facilitate appropriate training. Provide coaching, direction and work assignments in alignment with team members’ areas of responsibility. Encourage strong lines of communication and collaboration within the team and its members.
  • Regularly communicate with faculty to share best practices, build awareness of available resources, and collect feedback on academic technology performance.
  • Collaborate with the Center for Teaching and Learning to improve teaching and learning through the effective use of technology. Collaborate in order to develop effective practices for faculty and students, as well as connect faculty with established or new technology in order to meet needs or address gaps.
  • Oversee faculty and staff technology training. Manage training staff as they address university training needs, develop materials, and adapt their training strategies to connect with users more meaningfully.
  • Manage the administration of the Learning Management System and other centrally administered instructional systems, in collaboration with both UP and vendor resources.
  • Stay up to date on emerging technologies that could improve academic technology practices, and work with faculty to share ideas and discuss pilot programs.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to ensure that technologies and resources provided to students are accessible to all learners and meet UP information security and privacy requirements.
  • Coordinate classroom and faculty support with other faculty-facing teams, particularly the Help Desk and Audiovisual teams, to ensure a seamless support experience.
  • Work with the Information Services leadership team to align departmental strategy to the University, improve staff engagement and development opportunities, and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Work with the CIO to manage the academic technology budget. Provide recommendations for new purchases or for services to be discontinued.

    Requirements:
    Education and Experience
  • Required: Bachelor’s degree and minimum three years’ experience teaching or in another academic field, such as instructional technology, library services, or instructional design.
  • Preferred: Experience in a higher education environment.
  • Preferred: Minimum one year of experience as a manager.
  • Or a combination of equivalent education and/or experience.

  • Certificatios and Licenses
    • Required: Active driver’s license.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Broad understanding of the ways in which technology impacts teaching, learning, and research in a higher education environment, including such subjects as learning management systems, video/media archives, accessibility tools, and online learning modalities and design.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards and regulatory requirements for an academic technology environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, across all formats, with faculty and students, both to gather insights and distribute important information.
  • Experience managing and supervising a team.
  • Ability to work effectively with a team to assess technology needs, consider and weigh different options, and build consensus around a final solution.
  • Ability to manage and balance multiple projects, communicate effectively with stakeholders, and work with staff to prioritize resources.
  • Competence with and commitment to diversity and inclusion. Ability to be an effective partner with diverse students, faculty, and staff and to nurture a welcoming and inclusive environment within the team. Professional insight into how one can use academic technology to create a more welcoming environment for all students.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and effectively handle highly sensitive and personal information with sound judgment, tact, and discretion.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships, professional rapport, and effectively accomplish work within a University setting that includes a wide array of individuals, groups, policies, and processes.
  • Effective ability to use and learn computers, technology, software, and applications at level of sophistication required for the duties of the position, including, without limitation, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), the internet, and computerized maintenance management systems.*
