Summary:
The University of Portland seeks an Internship & Experiential Learning Coordinator. This position is responsible for serving as the central contact and resource for internships and experiential learning within the Career Education Center at University of Portland. This role works with key constituencies across campus to provide leadership, structure and coordination of both for-credit and independent internships. This position manages all aspects of the University internship program and standardizes all internal and external components for internships through acting as a liaison to staff and faculty partners within academic colleges and professional schools and employers with specific attention towards student success and equitable and inclusive practice. This role assists with the creation, coordination, and implementation of programs and initiatives to cultivate new and ongoing relationships with employers in order to connect UP students to meaningful experiences. This role provides internship education through programs, events and resources.

    Responsibilities:
    Duties Related to Internship Program and Data Management and Education
  • Lead the implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive internship program with an emphasis on equitable access and expanding student participation. Contribute to developing and assessing learning outcomes.
  • Ensure that University-wide internship protocols, processes and common language for internship experiences are utilized. Continually evaluate and improve existing policies and procedures for internships and experiential education.
  • Develop sharp expertise and fluency in Handshake.
  • Manage all aspects of academic internship logistics, including class rosters, standard learning agreements, mid-point and final evaluations. Maintain accurate records of student internship participation.
  • Understand current legal, ethical and justice issues surrounding student internships and be able to articulate these issues to others. Recognize the connection between access to internships and equity; help increase student opportunities in order to remove barriers to internship participation and experiences.
  • Collect and analyze internship data, including credit-bearing internships, and prepare summary reports.
  • Train and supervise student employee(s) within the Career Education Center, including hiring, onboarding, training, coaching and performance evaluations.

  • Duties Related to Communications, Marketing and Staff and Faculty Relations
  • Partner with faculty and staff to facilitate coordinated internship marketing, program strategy and communication with and between students, employers, faculty, staff and alumni to encourage student engagement with internship opportunities, to promote internship participation and generate internship opportunities.
  • Promote the accessibility of internship opportunities by ensuring all internships and events are shared on a centralized system and disseminated across campus.
  • Work collaboratively across campus to support policy and procedures that ensure the academic quality and integrity of internships.
  • Create and update internship resources for students, faculty and employers, including guides and website resources.
  • Implement ongoing awareness and career education campaigns, including through community presentations, about the benefits of participating in experiential education and contribute to telling the story of student internship participation.

  • Duties Related to External Relations
  • Utilize data to develop and maintain substantial and continuing contacts with businesses, industry, government and alumni representatives in order to establish meaningful experiential learning opportunities for students. Guide them in the development of internship positions that complement and enhance students’ academic and professional goals.
  • Partner with the Career Education Center staff and other campus partners to enhance and grow employer and alumni relationships in order to develop quality internship opportunities for students.
  • Develop, coordinate, and implement programs and events to educate students about internship search strategies and internship experience preparedness in collaboration with faculty and staff partners.

    Requirements:
    Education and Experience
  • Required: Bachelor’s degree.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in business, higher education, human resources, or related field.
  • Preferred: Minimum 2 years’ professional experience in higher education.
  • Preferred: Experience in workshop presentation and public speaking.
  • Preferred: Experience coordinating experiential programs within higher education settings.
  • Preferred: Supervisory or advisory role with secondary or post-secondary students.
  • Preferred: Canva, graphic design and/or email marketing experience.Or a combination of equivalent education and/or experience.

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of and interest in higher education internship practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, handle and follow through on projects, and meet deadlines. Ability to multi-task in a dynamic environment and demonstrate superb organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with diverse faculty, staff, students and employers with experience in promoting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workforce/academic environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and effectively handle confidential student information with sound judgment, tact, and discretion.
  • Strong orientation towards taking ownership of projects and assignments and being proactive with projects, assignments, and process improvements. Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and to constructively receive supervisory direction.
  • Ability to exercise excellent judgment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking. Strong and effective interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with organizations and departments within and outside the University.
  • Ability to collect and analyze data to inform decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability in event planning and promotion.
  • Strong ability to work effectively with college-age individuals and groups including supervising student staff.
  • Competence with and commitment to diversity and inclusion; ability to be an effective partner with diverse students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships, professional rapport, and effectively accomplish work within a University setting that includes a wide array of individuals, groups, policies, and processes.
  • Effective ability to use and learn computers, technology, software, and applications at level of sophistication required for the duties of the position, including, without limitation, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), the internet, and computerized maintenance management systems.*
