Cataloging and Government Documents Librarian (Senior Assistant Librarian)

 

Penfield Library at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications to fill a full time, 12-month, tenure-track faculty Cataloging and Government Documents Librarian (Senior Assistant Librarian).

Description of Responsibilities: 

The Cataloging and Government Documents Librarian is responsible for cataloging resources in all formats and managing government documents. This position is expected to participate actively in liaison, reference, and instruction duties; and fulfill scholarship, service, and continuing professional development consistent with University standards for promotion and tenure. This position reports to the Collections Management Librarian and works closely with the copy cataloging staff. The selected candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Oversees the copy cataloging function: trains copy cataloging staff and monitors work product to ensure compliance with appropriate cataloging and metadata standards. Participates in project planning, with an eye to increasing efficiencies and building sustainable workflows. Performs original and complex copy cataloging for all formats, as well as materials in Archives and Special Collections. Works closely with library staff to resolve routine cataloging inconsistencies and problems as they arise. Maintains the accuracy and integrity of bibliographic and authority records in the online catalog and creates metadata. Develops and regularly reviews cataloging standards, policies, and procedures to ensure accurate and timely maintenance of catalog and digital records by cataloging staff. Responsible for all aspects of Penfield’s Government Document Collection. Withdraws superseded volumes and coordinates maintenance of the physical documents collection. Facilitates access to electronic government documents. Serves as a resource person for Government Document-related issues. Serves as the depository coordinator for the Federal Depository Library Program and represents the library at regional and national Government Document meetings. Serves as liaison to assigned academic departments, providing instruction, and participating in collection development in those areas. Participates in Research Help Desk rotation for on-site and virtual reference (may include some evening shifts). As a member of the faculty, serves on various campus-wide and college governance committees, SUNY-wide committees, and makes scholarly and creative contributions to the profession. Engages in educational opportunities about, and works to increase awareness and understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's in library science from an ALA accredited program, by time of appointment.  Working knowledge of cataloging standards & tools including AACR2, RDA, OCLC, MARC formats, LC classification, LCSH, and authority control. Strong interpersonal skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively. Demonstrated interest or engagement with social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion issues, through professional or community experience. Commitment and a willingness to reflect those principles in descriptive work.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience with cataloging Experience in an academic library setting. Experience using Ex Libris Library Management System and OCLC Connexion for cataloging. Demonstrated ability to thrive in an atmosphere of continuous change, to work within a collaborative team environment with diverse groups, to inspire and motivate, and show creativity in problem-solving. Experience cataloging archives and special collections items and digital materials. Experience working with Government Documents and knowledge of current trends in government information.
