Position Summary and Responsibilities
The Academic Computing Consultant for Geographical Information Systems' (GIS) primary responsibility is to support the academic use of GIS and related software and hardware on campus. This position will be part of the college's Academic Computing Services team, with additional supervision from the department of Earth Science and Geography.

The Consultant will support faculty and students using GIS resources and promote and share expertise in the use of GIS and related technology among all relevant academic departments of the college, through demonstrations, training, individual assistance, and assistance with developing related teaching materials. Student and faculty support could be for activities such as courses and labs, individual research projects, community engaged learning, and GIS related studies on the Vassar Preserve. Outreach connecting Vassar students with community GIS projects or opportunities is valued.
The Consultant is expected to maintain professional contacts and keep up to date through professional development activities such as attending conferences, participating in online communities, and producing reports and papers.
Additional responsibilities include:
  • Ensure the functionality of hardware and software in the GIS lab and in related facilities, including research labs and offices.
  • Maintain additional hardware related to spatial analysis (such as mobile GPS units and drones) which includes providing system administration; maintaining hardware; installing, updating, and maintaining software; and troubleshooting hardware and software problems in those facilities.
  • Conduct research on and assist in acquiring or developing geographical information databases for teaching and research purposes, and update the faculty on new developments in the field.
  • Teach an annual average of 1.5 units in GIS, cartography, or related topics. (Actual teaching could be either 1 or 2 units per year, but not more than one course per semester.)
  • Participation in research activities, course-related projects, community-based projects, and grant writing is encouraged, as time allows beyond the primary duties cited above.





Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or equivalent in a field related to geography or instructional technology;
  • Minimum three years professional experience using GIS technology, preferably ArcGIS software; professional GIS certification or equivalent preferred;
  • A broad familiarity with the digital tools and resources required across the academic disciplines;
  • Excellent technical skills, including: knowledge of specialized hardware and software tools used for GIS and the ability to learn new technologies;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Experience in teaching, preferably at the college level;
  • The ability to manage projects and work effectively in time-constrained situations;
