Job Description Summary
The Community Engagement and Research Coordinator position is a unique opportunity to help develop and grow several efforts at Penn Medicine to dismantle structural and institutional racism through research and action. The Community Engagement and Research Coordinator will work closely with Project Managers, Urban Health Lab Faculty Director, and the Opportunity for Health Lab Director on a broad range of neighborhood-based initiatives to advance the science of urban health including:
- An NIH funded randomized controlled trial designed to improve
health among Black Philadelphians through neighborhood vacant lot
cleaning, abandoned house remediation, tree planting, trash pickup,
tax preparation, financial counseling, micro grants, and maximizing
public benefits.
- The Nature and Well-Being Project- a research study designed to
evaluate the impact of greenspace on mental health and wellbeing in
Black communities.
- Various other projects within the Urban Health Lab and
Opportunity for Health Lab
Job Description
Job Responsibilities
CRC "A": The Community Engagement and Research Coordinator will:
- attend weekly project and UHL team meetings and work as team
with fellow community and research engagement
coordinators.
- travel in teams of two to different neighborhoods in Philadelphia to enroll study participants through door-to-door recruitment and conduct study activities.
- conduct face to face and/or phone surveys and interviews with study participants.
- conduct computer data entry.
- help to connect participants to financial service partners.
- talk with neighborhood residents about tree planting.
CRC "B": The Community Engagement and Research Coordinator will:
- bring community perspectives, knowledge, and feedback to help inform study designs, including the creation and execution of study protocols, as well problem solving any issues with community engagement.
- attend weekly project and UHL team meetings and work as team with fellow community and research engagement coordinators.
- help develop participant interview guides and outreach communications.
- travel in teams of two to different neighborhoods in Philadelphia to enroll study participants through door-to-door recruitment and conduct study activities.
- conduct face to face and/or phone surveys and interviews with study participants.
- conduct computer data entry.
- help to connect participants to financial service partners.
- talk with neighborhood residents about tree planting.
The ideal candidate (1) is passionate about the health and well-being of Black and other minority communities, (2) has lived experience either being from or currently living in Black Philadelphia neighborhoods, (3) community experience and knowledge of Philadelphia neighborhoods, particularly Black neighborhoods; community experience and knowledge is of great importance to this position and will override any education requirements (3) has strong social, rapport building, and oral communication skills, proficiency in Spanish is a plus but not required (4) is comfortable meeting with and conducting interviews with study participants in person across Philadelphia and via phone, (5) preferably has a driver's license and is able to drive or take public transportation from the Penn campus to Philadelphia neighborhoods, (6) and is willing to work a flexible schedule as needed that may include some evenings and some weekends during study recruitment periods.
The Penn Urban Health Lab is dedicated to designing and testing individual and community level interventions to build healthy neighborhoods. The UHL has a focus in urban nature, blight remediation, violence prevention, and structural racism that has impacted Black and Brown communities. The Opportunity for Health Lab seeks to understand how the American Dream affects health and identifies ways to eliminate health disparities by improving economic opportunities. This position is funded for 5 years.
CRC "A" Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree with 1-2 years of related experience in research and clinical study methodologies or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. 1-2 years of community experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
CRC "B" Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree with 2-3 years of related experience in research and clinical study methodologies or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. 2-3 years of community experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
