555 Penn's state-of-the-art facilities will enhance the student experience, bringing all of JHU's previous DC-based graduate programming under one roof. Graduate programs will be offered at 555 Penn by the School of Advanced International Studies, the Carey Business School, and the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. 555 Penn will also provide the space, connections, and access for all Hopkins stakeholders to expand their offerings, including programs like the Johns Hopkins Congressional Briefing Series, the Johns Hopkins Health Policy Forum, and the Johns Hopkins Briefing. Other marquee initiatives at the university will also develop programming at 555 Penn, and it will provide a space to develop creative thought leadership opportunities.
JHU's new space at 555 Penn will allow for new levels of collaboration that go beyond Hopkins. Faculty, students, and alumni will benefit from the open exchange of ideas with global leaders, national policymakers, visionary entrepreneurs, and other notable change makers. 555 Penn provides JHU with strategic positioning that will ensure global dialogue and democracy are informed by the university's evidence-based research.
We are seeking a Sr Director, Finance & Administration 555 Penn (SDFA), also known as a Divisional Business Officer (DBO), will serve as the chief financial officer and the chief administrative officer for the 555 Penn building. As the Executive Director's strategic partner and trusted advisor, this position provides financial and operational leadership in this exceptional, high-profile building at one of the world's preeminent research universities.Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Under general direction of 555 Penn's Executive Director, and
with a secondary reporting relationship to the university's Senior
VP for Finance and Administration, the SDFA plans, organizes,
directs, and strategically manages the administrative and financial
operations of the building.
- 555 Penn is a university building that is not owned by any one
of the university's divisions. The physical asset will be managed
by the SDFA in partnership with the Johns Hopkins Facilities and
Real Estate (JHFRE) department. This coordination will include
planning, budgeting, expense management, operational services, and
maintenance activities. A property management firm, with a dual
reporting relationship to JHFRE and the SDFA, will oversee routine
building services, engineering services, and maintenance
activities.
- Together with the Executive Director and in collaboration with
the heads of the University's academic divisions, the SDFA defines
strategic objectives for 555 Penn and ensures that all tactical
plans are established and implemented. The SDFA leads the
development of the annual operating and capital budgets and
five-year financial plan and presents this plan to university and
divisional leadership.
The SDFA has Operating Responsibility for 555 Penn's
- Physical property management.
- Facility operations.
- Financial management.
- Information technology services.
- Events management (Conference Center, theater, other spaces).
- Human resources (for the 555 Penn staff).
- Space management.
- Central scheduling operation.
- Crisis management, business continuity, and risk management.
- Metrics/Reporting.
- The SDFA has a dotted-line relationship for 555 Penn's
security, Sheridan Library, and the Student Health and Wellbeing
operations.
- The SDFA is responsible for the development of comprehensive
budgets, timely financial reporting, and accurate financial
projections during the fiscal year. The position oversees the
monitoring and controlling of all 555 Penn expenditures and is also
responsible for timely financial transactions and guaranteeing that
financial statements are accurate, governed by a comprehensive set
of financial policies and controls that ensure quality. The annual
budget process includes determination of annual tenant rent and the
divisional allocation of 555 Penn costs, as well as communication
of these allocations to divisional leadership.
- The SDFA will develop and implement robust analytical tools and
dashboards to measure and improve the efficiency and effectiveness
of 555 Penn operations.
- In coordination with central Human Resources, the SDFA will
ensure that 555 Penn implements and models good human capital
practices especially in the areas of performance management,
engagement, professional development, compensation administration,
and talent acquisition for its administrative staff.
- The incumbent will lead, serve on, or support various
committees that will be established related to building operations
and/or the advancement of interdisciplinary initiatives that are
enabled by the 555 Penn building.
Supervisory Responsibilities
The SDFA manages- The contracted property management team, in partnership with JHFRE.
- The facility operations supervisor and associated staff.
- Financial operations, in coordination with JHU's central budget office.
- The IT Director and associated staff.
- The contracted events management team.
- HR services, in coordination with University Administration.
- The central scheduling staff person.
- The position has 5 direct and approximately 40 indirect staff
reports.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Management, Administration, or a related field; Master’s degree strongly preferred.
- Ten plus years of progressively responsible financial and business operations experience, preferably in a large and complex organization.

- Strong analytical skills to evaluate operational and financial
data.
- Demonstrated leadership, planning, change management, and process improvement skills.
- Strong supervisory abilities and proven experience in managing and developing high performance teams within a dynamic organization.
- Possess a leadership style that works in collaboration with a wide variety of constituencies, building good working relationships using excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, tact, and persuasion.
- Ability to inspire trust and work collegially and transparently with faculty members, staff, school and campus officers, university administrators, students, benefactors, and business partners.
