Position Summary:
Performs research activities and analysis; implements, evaluates and recommends adjustments to research procedures. Responsible for synthesizing and independently preparing results for publication. Works under general supervision with a significant degree of creativity and latitude. May coordinate research operations and the daily activities of junior research personnel.

  • Participating in planning and/or designing of major scientific projects, studies, or applications
  • Planning and conducting research and analysis of scientific data
  • Preparing graphic and narrative reports
  • Interpreting test results and comparing with determined standards and limits
  • Performing site inspections and field oversight if field work is required
  • Planning, designing, developing, monitoring and/or evaluating a distinct portion of a scientific project, study or application
  • Researching, designing, implementing, standardizing, and evaluating new procedures
  • Maintaining detailed records of results and prepares written reports acceptable to the Principal Investigator and funding agencies
  • Other duties as assigned

    Provide support of functions and laboratory activities associated with research and creative scholarship in the Margaret Ritchie School of Family and Consumer Sciences; disciplines may include human nutrition, child development, human development and family studies, and textiles/apparel. Provide training for lab personnel, undergraduate students, and graduate students by supervising and overseeing training on the major and minor general instruments within research laboratories. Provide regular oversight of proper maintenance and operation of laboratory instruments. Assist in preparation of abstracts and manuscripts for publication of experimental results. Regularly review the scientific literature to stay current and to participate in discussions in laboratory/group meetings and in journal clubs. Serve as a team member for various committees within the school as appropriate.

    Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master of Science (MS) degree in nutrition, food science, chemistry, biology, physiology, animal science, dairy science, veterinary science, or closely related scientific degree.
  • Two years of research experience beyond receipt of master’s degree related to the domain of this position.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least 2 years of experience working with a variety of standard laboratory techniques and approaches.
  • Evidence of good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Evidence of strong work ethic.
  • Competency using computers and analytical equipment.
  • Knowledge about and experience conducting controlled experiments.
  • Ability to manage data to the final report form, either abstract or manuscript.
  • Willingness and ability to work with human subjects and research animals.
  • Willingness and ability to coordinate duties among more than one supervisor.
  • Advanced training and experience in molecular biology protocols, microbiology, gas chromatography, and/or analysis of micronutrients and macronutrients.
  • Experience conducting human studies.
  • Experience conducting animal studies.
  • Basic competence in statistical approaches.
  • Experience writing manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication.

  • Ability to carry, lift or otherwise move heavy materials weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • May be required to work with toxic, volatile and corrosive chemicals and/or carcinogenic substances.
  • May be required to work in adverse environmental conditions.
