Job Description

The newly created Executive Director position in the Graduate School will lead and manage a team that provides university-wide efforts to support and enhance the graduate student and postdoctoral fellow experience through proactive measures to enhance professional development, career success, teaching excellence, well-being, and academic success. Key responsibilities include leadership and supervision of professional staff in the Graduate School who deliver programming to support career and professional development, as well as managing collaborative efforts with leadership and staff across all schools and colleges to coordinate and ensure support for graduate student and postdoc success. In addition, the Executive Director will supervise staff who support efforts to secure recognition for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in the form of nationally competitive grants, fellowships, and awards. Across all activities, the incumbent leader will work to ensure a balanced and strategic approach in the allocation of human and financial resources to maximize value of programs and services.

Qualifications

PhD or other terminal degree required. Knowledge of current issues, practices, and approaches in graduate education. At least 5 years’ experience in program planning, leadership, administration, and evaluation, preferably in a college or university setting. Teaching experience at the college level. Supervisory and budget management experience.

Job Specific Qualifications

Up-to-date knowledge of higher education pedagogy, knowledge, and background in leading team members in promoting professional and career at the graduate and postdoctoral level, and familiarity with the needs and circumstances of international graduate students. Ability to work in a team and independently. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities
  • University-level leadership in overseeing a comprehensive approach to professional and career development for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. Lead professional staff in the delivery of individual and group-based career counseling, career-related programming, and support for grant, fellowship, and award applications. Oversight of graduate school staff, provision of strategic guidance to Graduate School Dean, and facilitation of collegial working relationships with faculty and staff from all schools and colleges, with a focus on continuous delivery of programing to support graduate student teaching excellence, degree completion, health and wellness, career exploration and preparation, and job-search readiness.
  • Oversee programming and services to support TAs, including a nationally recognized TA Orientation program, as well as initiatives supporting specific populations, including international students, members of underrepresented groups (Graduate School BIPOC Alliance for Excellence), and aspiring faculty (organizing annual Future Professoriate Program [ FPP ] program, annual conference and Certificate in University Teaching). Direct staff in the provision of English Language Proficiency services, including language assessment process for international TAs. Administration of language courses for TAs (in coordination with ESOL program); Accent Addition program (in coordination with Gebbie Clinic) and supervision of the English conversation partner service. Oversee provision of professional development opportunities (e.g., Three-Minute Thesis competition, digital badge in research communication, Certificate in University Teaching programming) and career resources.
  • Oversee Graduate school staff in their efforts to secure recognition for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in the form of nationally competitive grants, fellowships, and awards. Oversee internal award competitions including the Outstanding TA and Excellence in Graduate Education award processes.
  • Lead efforts to enhance the graduate student and postdoctoral scholar experience. Provide a balanced and strategic approach in the allocation of human and financial resources to maximize value of programs and services. Collaborate with academic and administrative units, student groups, and external partners on issues impacting graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. Promote community-building, student life, and wellness among graduate students and postdoctoral scholars (Graduate School BIPOC Alliance, social events) to enhance the student experience and facilitate timely degree completion. Organize annual Dissertation Boot Camp.
  • Direct Graduate School Press book publication series.
