Description

The Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and the Social Sciences (the “Center”) at Dartmouth College seeks an Executive Director. The Center serves as a catalyst for public policy research, teaching, and deliberation. Funded primarily by income from endowments, the Center is dedicated to providing an interdisciplinary non-partisan perspective on policy-related topics. Additionally, the Center fosters a commitment to the ideals of public service and informed public debate exemplified by Nelson A. Rockefeller, former governor of New York State and Vice President of the United States. The Center pursues these objectives through a variety of programs, including administration of a minor in Public Policy, which is one of the most popular degree programs of its kind at Dartmouth. The Center also provides financial support for student internships, grants for faculty research and conferences, interdisciplinary faculty seminars, and lectures with distinguished visiting scholars, leaders, and policymakers. For more information on the Center, please visit our website: https://rockefeller.dartmouth.edu .

We seek applicants with a PhD in any social science discipline who have a strong background in public policy. Key responsibilities and duties include:
  • Working closely with the Director and other organizational leaders in critical areas such as strategic thinking, long-range planning, inter-office relations, and partnerships with academic departments and campus organizations.
  • Developing and implementing activities and events within the Center for audiences on campus and beyond.
  • Supervisory responsibility for Center personnel, including staff and students.
  • Oversight and tracking of Center operations.
  • Serving as the primary point of contact for the Center’s Board of Visitors and alumni.
  • Coordinating communications with diverse audiences to help articulate the priorities and achievements of the Center (e.g., faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, friends, academic institutions, think tanks, governmental organizations, as well as other campus offices).
  • Cultivating, soliciting, and managing relationships with alumni and financial supporters as well as helping to develop new revenue streams through grants and other fundraising initiatives.
The Executive Director position is a renewable non-tenure-track appointment in the Arts and Sciences at Dartmouth College. The initial appointment will be for a one-year term but multi-year renewals are possible and expected. The academic nature of the appointment includes a limited teaching commitment. Salary will be highly competitive, commensurate with experience and credentials. The starting date is negotiable but expected to be in the spring or summer of 2023.

The Center, and Dartmouth as a whole, are highly committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive population of students, faculty, and staff. We are especially interested in applicants who are able to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds, including but not limited to: racial and ethnic minorities, women, individuals who identify with LGBTQ+ communities, individuals with disabilities, individuals from lower income backgrounds, and/or first-generation college graduates. The ability to engage in diverse discussions from multiple perspectives across the ideological spectrum and from opposing viewpoints is vital. Accordingly, applicants should state in their letter of application how their professional experiences and/or life experiences prepare them to advance Dartmouth’s commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Qualifications
